Totally normal, 8 hours is actually nothing. But the * is that it's an average and the more important barometer is the monthly total. So, if you had 10 hours one day and 6 the next, nbd.
1900 works out to a little over 8 billable hours/day on average if you take days off for 11 federal holidays, 3 weeks vacation/sick/other PTO, and a couple days for conferences/retreats/other mostly nonbillable days.
I don’t think the expectation is that you don’t take lunch or ever do non-billable work; I think the expectation is that lawyers work more than 8 hours/day / 40 hours a week.
A daily requirement apart from annual is dumb

Does your firm have an annual billable hour expectation?
Associate 1, I think that hits it right on the head. It's a national-level firm, and I am in one of the larger offices. Our admins are always on fire, and I unfortunately have a very particular partner who generates a lot of nonbillable time by given astoundingly poor instructions.
No. Daily billable expectations are wild. What if you have an internal training or a client lunch? Something like a requirement to enter 7 hours (billable or non-billable) is more common.
My first firm had no annual requirement but instead had an 8 hour a day daily requirement. It was super weird, and ive never heard of it anywhere else. Most firms have an expectation that you’ll bill about 40 hours a week. So TECHNICALLY that equates to 8 hours a day, but in reality a lot of us will have some days above 8 and some below it. Ive learned that to bill 8 hours without stress; you need to work about 10 hours. The fewer hours you carve out for your work day, the more efficient you need to be. Personally, i dont take lunch breaks. I find it harder to get myself back in motion for the afternoon, and also id rather be able to log off earlier. That helps me get to around 8 hrs and still usually log off by 6 or 6:30
yes. as others have said, 8 hours of billables is nothing. light day imo. however, i have never worked at a firm where billables were counted DAILY. it was always how many hours were billed per month + if you fell short on that number.. not good.
you can still do non-billable work, eat lunch, and take a few breaks billing 8 hours. you’re an attorney. we don’t always work typical hours or have a typical traditional schedule. every day is going to look different + be affected by different factors.
