Is it relatively safe to assume someone who has made it at the same firm for 6+ years is a competent capable and respected lawyer there

Relatively safe assumption? Yes.
Guaranteed? No.

From what I've seen there are really two major push out points for bad associates (barring practice group slowdowns) - beginning or during their 2nd year, or around 6th-7th or so year when they have no future at the firm and they're past their profitability peak.

I've known plenty of people who weren't very liked at all (or may have been good juniors but bad once the job started getting more substantive) but made it unscathed through their midlevel years. Firms don't like firing midlevels - that's when you're at the peak of your profitability for the firm (your billing rates are high, your salary is still relatively low, and you bill a ton of hours babysitting juniors and being primary drafter, etc.). So a lot of the time, they'll just use you on "b-team" matters and put up with babysitting you a little bit more until they've milked you dry and it makes more sense to put you out to pasture.

So, short answer - I don't think you can safely assume they're respected by sole virtue of having been at one firm for a long time. But you can probably safely assume they're not as terrible as some of the people you'll see get pushed out as juniors.

It’s becoming much more common for first years to be shown the door. A lot of top firms over hired…

No, you would be surprised how long a poor associate (even one who is disliked by many) makes it in big law. I worked with a few who the partners openly complained about, but never did anything about, except lose good associates who were burned out from taking on bad associates’ workloads.

The second you’re comfortable you become vulnerable. Always keep pushing. The best writer I ever met has been practicing Supreme Court appellate law for 20 years. He still reads every single merits brief in every SCOTUS case, looking for ways to improve his skills. That’s what it takes to be a high performer.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

The only problem is my significant other has a lot of negative opinions about New York. I ultimately want to return to DC but I feel like a few good years in New York would be really good for me. In terms of a place to live, where in Manhattan can I find a place that's similar to River North in Chicago?
