"Metal" is the operating carrier. You can only use SWU on an AA operated flight, not on a flight marketed/sold by AA, but operated by a codeshare partner.
If so, any ideas on how to get 10k cheaply?
If I get 6 total I'd like to fly the wife and kid to HKG in business class, I can calculate the fare difference to compare value, but haven't redeemed an SWU and don't know it it's a 1:1 value.
Are you doing UA or AA? there are cheap trips to asia for 500 RT you can do same day turn
I’d value an SWU on an international flight at least at 1-2K

I would check for upgrade availability first. It's rare to come by for AA metal flights to hkg and especially for 6 people
Do you have a need for said SWU? If so then yes.
I think the LAX-HKG route is supposed to be fairly easy for the upgrade, but you'll be very hard pressed to get 3 SWU's on the DFW route (I'm 2/2 ex-DFW, 0/2 ex-HKG booking 8 months out when it was based on time of request).
I would do the mileage run. Depending on the departure city, there are flights to HK and other destinations in Asia for <$700.

Thanks D1, that's my dilemma. I'd hate to do this then not get the upgrades, so was trying to determine if it's worth it. I'll keep my eyes open for a 48 hour round trip Asia flight, for $500 it's probably worth it anyway. If I do HKG I'll go through LAX, I like their lounges much better than DFW anyway

I would / have done it - overnight coast-to-coast trips on back-to-back weekends, plus another random work flight that I finagled.
Not sure where you're based but you can buy a business class ticket to South America for probably around $1000 (like Bogota) that would get you 10k eqms. I would say 2 SWUs are worth $1000 if you have a redemption in mind.
