What careers pay the best in the Uk?
Hi fishers! I have offer and signed contract with Deloitte UK and my start day is in the beginning of April. I need skilled worker visa, and we haven’t applied yet for that. Screening and onboarding is in progress. Immigration team doesn’t reply since reached me out 1st time. How much time does it usually needed to go through the whole process? How many days take for visa to be approved since application?Deloitte

If you like to drive beyond London then buy it. It will open you the rest of the country massively and broaden your experience. There is a life outside London.
If you are not in love with driving then use public transport. It’s more than money.
Parking(£150-£200), insurance(£60-£100), service(£40-£60), MOT(£50-&100 a year), tax(£15-£30) will cost you approx £400-&500 in a month(modest estimation).
If you are not fun of doing trips outside of work and explore country at least once in a month then it will bite you. Don’t justify a cat by also doing shopping besides commute. Shopping can be done online.

It depends car is not just to get to work in my opinion.
For me I found getting a car was worth it.
1. I had never driven before in my life so decided to learn and get the practice.
2. I am an immigrant and wish to explore the country and car is the cheapest mode of transport. Me and my wife did a trip up north on a train, and very recently we drove to south-west of the country - both are around 250 miles away but our trip in car was 2-3 times cheaper.
4. Convenience - going out for weekly shop, or visit to cinema, dropping friend at a station etc has become so much more convenient after car
3. I didn't buy a fancy car, I got 10 year old car which was cheap, and has been reliable so farm
The main costs of car are insurance and maintenance, as you mentioned, but don't forget the fuel and parking cost, and parking fine as well. I bought £6000 car and anticipate £3600 to be annual cost of running the car (assuming will do 5000 miles in a year).
Feel free to DM me if you have more questions

Thanks for that, I agree with everything you said and wasn’t thinking of buying something expensive either.
My main motivation is convenience and having a bit more flexibility. I feel I’m wasting so much time in the bus.
I don’t live near a station and rely mostly on the bus or walk.
I would use the car for going to work but other things too 🙂.
I have a car in zone 4/5, would probably have one in zone 3 too. I went without a car for two years when living in zone 1/2 but when I moved a bit further out decided it was worth it again.
Other costs to consider - parking, what is the permit situation? This can be expensive in certain areas
ULEZ compliant also to avoid those costs also

Thank you that is very helpful, I have a parking option where I live :)
Actual driving time: 15mins
Finding parking: 10mins
Time to recover from ensuing aneurysm: 12 months
Save yourself the emotional trauma that is driving in London mate
Canary Wharf and Canning town is so busy... I was looking at Woolwich and Stratford but I think I should head back west.
Was at Vauxhall before, driving is nice apart from the 20mph limit, and wrong turns incur a congestion charge
10 min drive at London speeds? Surely just walk, get those steps in!

Are you doing all of those with no cycle path in the cold and in the dark in the evening?
Are you a man or woman? What about safety?
Depends whether you use it for work only or also will be using it to go somewhere further. For work only probably not worth it. The cost of all likely will be more expensive than getting uber as the distance seems quite small.
Costs to consider:
Insurance
parking by your home
petrol
road tax
car itself,
parking by your work place,
car maintenance etc.
Depends on parking situation at work and permits around your residence. If parking at both is relatively easy then having a car in zone 3 is fine.
Main costs: fuel, parking, insurance, maintenance, road tax. If you get a petrol car then you don’t have to worry about ULEZ.
For a 10 minute drive, I would personally either walk or cycle that. A car is a very expensive way to shorten that particular journey! Will you just want to use the car for this commute or do you regularly need to get out of London to places that a car would make easier?
Cost wise, fuel is expensive and cars cost far more to fix these days than they used to. Jobs that should be simple often aren't in modern car designs, so be prepared for some pretty expensive bills.
Lots of people in SW London do have cars, but I would expect London's policies to get more & more anti-car over the coming years and the cost/benefit scenario may get worse for you. There are 9.6 million people living here, a population that gets to well over 10 million with commuters. There just isn't enough space for most people to use cars, so policymakers will inevitably look to other forms of transport when making decisions.

Principal motivation is convenience as well as going to work, and potentially go outside London
Get an e-bike! Best way to move around London IMO

We are not talking about central London here and what about the absence of cycle path?
It is probably cheaper to Uber to/from work 2 days per week, than to run a car…
