There might be some luck in when you make it, but no one is not making SM if they’re good. You may get lucky/unlucky and make it a few years earlier/later, but if you’re half decent you will make it

At KPMG, I’ve found SM is all about tenure even in what you would consider “technical” groups. I’ve met SM’s in M&A/International that were shocking.

MD and up you need something above tenure. Doesn’t always need to be technical, but needs to be some combination of politics, sales, technical, visibility to leadership in other BU’s and Service Lines, etc.

Core audit and tax and larger practices it’s usually tenure assuming you are performing well enough as a manager. For smaller more specialized groups in advisory it is more based on business case and having enough work and managed revenue to go around.

I know some dumb SMs. Tenure for SM. As you go above SM some skill and politics? But really depends on office location.

Is CMA worth getting after getting the CPA? Or is it better to get the CFA. Also don’t have much finance background so I don’t know if I can pass the CFA will require a lot of hard work. Interesting in hearing people’s thoughts.

I have no plans in leaving PA anytime soon but I figure maybe I should look into another certification that holds value and makes me more marketable compared to my peers. Appreciate any thoughts and advice.
