McKinsey & Company Is McKinsey & Company really worth it? Just got an offer from them. I'm an early career professional, have 1'5 years of experience in banking.

Got an offer to be an analyst but I would be taking a big pay cut. I know compensation is not everything but wondering if McKinsey is really worth the hype thinking more long-term? For example, does it really offer great exit opportunities, can you move relatively fast between the different roles if you're a good performer, etc

You’re an investment banking analyst? If so, probably would stay put depending on what it is you want to do. PE, asset management/hedge funds, VC, and other financially focused paths will fair better out of an IB background.

Are you trying to pivot into something else or just trying to get the McK stamp on your resume?

like

Interesting, wouldn’t have guessed you’d be taking a paycut from risk to join McKinsey. First, have you looked to see if any of the banks have roles that would be a fit for you in the US?

But otherwise, yes, I think a generalist background might serve you better to find opportunities to relocate. McKinsey analysts and associates are pretty sought after for a variety of jobs in the US, mostly corporate strategy but plenty of others too.

like

Don't. As an EM, recommend you don't join the sinking ship.

It’s the same company. Same man running the show.

If you want to stay in high finance in the future stay in banking (assuming IB at a good bank). McKinsey for basically anything else

Like my colleagues, I’d think carefully. It’s super tough to come in as an experienced hire. The firm just isn’t built for that and we can’t seem to fix it. If you have a senior partner sponsor who will commit to putting you in good situations you’ll do ok, but you can’t make it on your own and partner/AP guarantees are meaningless.

Yes

As clarification I'm based in Europe. I work in banking at second life of defense in credit risk project management. Basically data and strategy

How in the world are you taking a pay cut moving from Europe to Mck in the US?

like

Yes go to McKinsey. Easy decision and good luck!

Don’t.

You’re taking a significant pay cut to kill whatever work-life balance you currently have with a very high chance you’ll be pushed out soon enough too. McK has been downsizing over the last 2 years and trying to compensate less and less. The company’s gearing itself for a recession- wouldnt join.

I’m curious to know if anyone has experience working part-time in architecture? I have been working for large international firms in NYC for the past 10 years. So I work all day every day. My evenings and often the weekends are all absorbed by work duties. Working part-time would allow me to find a better balance, and carve out space for side gigs and eventually start my own firm. Any recommendations?

Question, if you pay off your house isn’t a 100k salary more than enough to sustain a good lifestyle? My goal has always been to payoff my mortgage then find a really easy analyst role to sustain my expenses. Assuming I’m a director/VP by the time my mortgage is paid off I’d probably be able to do an analyst 40hr week in like 10hrs. Esp at some of these low expectation companies. What do y’all think about this plan?

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
