We need to stop using the word toxic for every little thing one doesn’t like. It’s losing all meaning and significance.
Controllers have authority to access financial data. They obviously need to tell everyone what’s happening if for no other reason than you knowing that they don’t have authority to access that information anymore. Having a team meeting where maybe everyone pays attention isn’t necessarily the only / best way to get that info out.
Beyond that we have no idea why this person left or what’s going on in your firm. But I don’t see how that email is toxic in the slightest.
Not to mention you still would never put the reason the person is leaving in an email to the whole firm. I 100% agree with everything you said. I’m not even remotely seeing anything toxic in this email besides the person asking about it 3 months later and putting the firm on blast.
Are you just catching up on emails from September
Of course you did, it almost makes too much sense.
That happens all the time and is expected. A better approach probably would’ve been to hold a team meeting with the finance team, but turning over people or top grading people is normal and expected.
The Tone at the top trickles down to middle and front line management. That's not the right approach, sending an email saying this person got fired because she wasn't performing.
I was at a firm that fired their controller, but it was in a much more tactful way.
I would say your firm is not building psychological safety
Definitely. Unless the ex controller was caught doing something unethical, this is not how you handle things
How would we know?
The labor law in this country is the TOXIC
Basically someone got fired and replaced. What is toxic about that? If there's some backstory as to why they got fired, nothing shows from that email...
Sorry want to try again GT1?
For a generic communication - easily subpoenaed if the firm were sued - what do YOU think it should say?
- lets all know of the changes
- says NOTHING bad about the departing person
A "just the facts, ma'am" approach is best. Individual questions can be handled face-to-face - but don't expect more clarity on the "why", you're not getting it (not in our litigious society).
I'm not really seeing what you're complaining about, actually. It may seem cold and impersonal, but for very good reasons. Get used to it.
It makes too obvious the person was let go not resign… I don’t see this kind of email from any other firm. No one would starts a sentence with that… “We let her go because she is not suit for fast growing firm”? Then what do they looking into? It’s a threat to other employees… It’s so unprofessional…
Rising Star
Here’s a pro tip:
Whenever an email says they “wish them the best in their future endeavors” means they got fired.
When someone leaves voluntarily on good terms, the email says “Please join us at Chili’s tonight for Bob’s farewell party! He devoted 12 years to the firm and he’s moving on to bigger adventures! Good luck Bob! We love you!”
12 years and all Bob gets is Chili's? Poor Bob.
I mean from what I know of your firm it’s anything but toxic and this email seems to just be them replacing someone with a person they believe is more qualified. What exactly is it that you find toxic?
The Americas and US Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer has been on quite the firing spree too, with zero transparency on these decisions. This has led to chaotic office politics and a toxic work culture. In his latest move, he sent out a kumbaya email claiming the partner was taking an early “retirement” and praising their great contributions and distinguished career.
Damn towers aren’t the only ones that had A rough 9/11…
Yes, let’s joke about the murder of 3,000+ people. Great idea!
i got terminated without cause as VP finance and the CEO didn’t even tell HR lol.
not toxic, but super unorganized
How did they already have a replacement ready to start on the next business day?
I'd say unprofessional, is the word you're seeking in this scenario.
I may agree with some of your thoughts, still you're not sure.
No matter the size of the Company, some people are sensitive. They may also be new to the workforce, unlike us, old vets.
You're more colder, than I. You don't have to be, to command respect, either.
Have a Fantastic week.
