Meditate in the evening before bed to slow/quiet the mind. Exercise to sweat out the meds (though not immediately before bed). If meds still going, change your focus to literally thinking about sleeping and eventually you will fall asleep. Life changer for me: blackout curtains!! Eliminate blue lights for 3 hours before bed. Hot shower before bed. Improve quality of bed/bedding/pillows. Dim the lights in your home for a few hours before bed. Oh huge one also life changing- make your home extremely cold, it makes you want to go to bed, and helps with sleep
This will not help much if you have a severe sleeping problem, but it works for me to make sure I do nothing work-related 45-60 mins before going to sleep. This means I go to sleep later (even when crunched), but tend to sleep better.
I use this time to listen to the radio, reading, or watching series (yet I try to avoid screens as well). I am trying to start the habit of meditating before going to bed as well, which also helps in reducing the level of mental stress
Agree on the not working before bed. I have to plan around a hard 3 hour gap between the end of my workday and going to bed. Work phone off and everything.
They stop working, so I feel like I drink often just to shut my brain off so that I can pass out. I take a pretty low dose, so wondering if it's maybe insomnia. Once I finally do fall asleep, I don't have trouble staying asleep. Open to suggestions but please don't suggest sleep study unless you've actually been through one.
You may or may not like this suggestion but hard workouts can help.
I find really boring podcasts effective. The more monotone, the better.
Trazadone. I had terrible insomnia before my doctor prescribed it. It is a medication that’s been around a very long time, and was originally used as an anti-depressant... but I take a tiny amount about 30 min before bed and I sleep REALLY well now.
Benedryl/generics work wonders too
Yes. Been taking it for 7 years. It has a very short half-life - about 10 hours - so it’s usually mostly out of your system by the time you wake up. Seriously, it changed my life. Diagnosed as “hyperactive” as a kid, then at 35 diagnosed as ADHD, but already a chronic insomniac who was then prescribed Adderall (!) which changed everything for the better - but did NOT help the insomnia, to say the least. Then was prescribed Trazadone by a doc who’s wife had taken it for years for insomnia. It totally fixed my sleep. Seriously it changed my life. But I am fine on a very small amount every night. In higher dosages it tends to be bad for your liver over time, but with the amount I take it’s in and out of your system. So talk to your doc about it.
Try Magnesium Citrate about an hour before you want to get in bed. Magnesium is one of those things that the adhd brain needs more of than neurotypical people. It also creates a natural tired feeling. The vitamin C from the citrate will titrate our any meds still in your system. Vitamin C bonds with Adderall forms and makes it inert. So don’t take vitamins or have any other vitamin C within an hour of taking meds
Thank you all so much!
RA1 Any other generics recs besides Benadryl?
Thanks D2, never heard of trazadone but looking into it. How long have you been taking it, and does it still work as well for you over time?
Going to try this... Hopefully it will change my life as well!!
Def stick with instant release, but try getting it out of your system by sweating it out - sweaty workouts after work or sauna.
