As long as you're willing to move and take the lower salary it's not bad.
As someone who has leveraged offshore resources, there is the good and the ugly. Offshoring sounds great for lowering your cost base. However, if you haven't done offshoring before you are in for a big surprise. The only offshore model that I have seen be successful in my career is an offshoring that was done in Manilla. The English in Manilla is very good, and this makes communication much easier. India and other locations across the globe struggle with communication. Not just speaking English, but their ability to absorb what it is that they exactly need to do. The time and effort that it takes to do even simple tasks, sometimes cancelled out the financial benefit you believe you are getting. It also depends on your partners on the ground in your chosen location. You can't just drop a bunch of work on them, without having a liaison on the ground who knows the culture and understands the challenges. All of this is to say, offshoring can work, but most Companies simply don't set up the right infrastructure to be successful. So, buyer be aware that this isn't something that manages itself. It has to be managed centrally and that costs hours of internal onshore resources staying on top of what the offshore resources are or aren't doing. Just my opinion.
In the near future? What is this? 2005?
Near future? Look around.
I thought this post was satire given the push is now to AI
When applying for jobs I specifically ask if company is currently outsourcing their services and if they say yes, I say thank you and keep looking for different role
Already happening everywhere at least in public accounting... I've had some offshore staff who were really good to be fair BUT many are not
I'm assuming you work at a very small firm. Offshoring is old news and frankly it gets bigger every year. At EY India offshoring has gotten expensive so we now have large offices in Mexo City and Argentina. We're chasing the least expensive resources to do the work and I don't see that changing. With the advances in AI it's only a matter of time before even those locations will become more expendable.
Yup; just happened to us @ Disney. Easy way to get rid of old timers making "too much" $
Has been going on since early 2000's.
Is it much different than outsourcing to AI?
Outsourcing AI is misnomer. AI is AI. Anyone can use it. Outsourcing AI just means you are leveraging a bunch of Einstein's to assist in the develop of AI platforms which your Company wants to develop but, doesn't have the intellectual horsepower internally. You could just as well hire those people to build what your Company needs from AI, but you choose to outsource that to the brainiacs. You still need some sort of governance/program management. So, I guess the answer to your question is that yes, this is a different type of outsourcing, but by definition it is still "outsourcing."
Just like any other large group of people there is a mixed dynamic of proficiency. My company utilizes an entire second team in India and most of them are solid. The communication dynamic can vary as English is still not their primary language but most of my colleagues are clear and fluent. Whoever vets the offshore team is the key figure for QC.
True
There is good and a lot of bad. But I've seen the good side, where the time difference becomes an advantage during crunch time. Send work to India at night and wake up to accurately prepared return and turn around prepared/reviewed deliverable to client in less than 24 hours.
My company hired an assistant for me as I was working insane hours. The offshore person was paid $4 an hour and after 3 years I was laid off and they hired another offshore person to become my assistant's assistant. So, I was replaced with two $4 an hour offshore employees.
Perfect example of why to never trust an employer's bs about loyalty.
