It’s not only real but so is PTO negotiation. I think I’ve been able to negotiate both the last 5 or so jobs I’ve had with the exception of my current job. When I receive the offer for my current role, it was presented to me by an HR Consultant that they had on staff. She was a nasty person throughout the whole interview process including the offer process and would not negotiate. Three months after I started, I was able to renegotiate my pay and bonus with the CEO. I think a big factor is how you present your request and your confidence level when presenting. If you say something like, do you think you would consider X amount of dollars, you’re not going to have a very good chance at them agreeing to your request.
This depends on the company. Most of us don't know this coming into a job. They figure you are desperate - Then you find out later that you accepted a low offer and your stuck and then you leave for more.
The current job market is in favor of the employers and that is not helping.
I have had many interviews that went well but when we started discussing salary I asked for what I was worth. Then conversations stopped
Some companies don’t negotiate. They have a very fixed rate of what they will pay and the benefits they will offer. Your job level, mid vs entry, will also play a big part in that.
It’s real! Your mileage may heavily vary based on company and position though
It is absolutely real. There are companies that won't negotiate at all and will tell you that the offer they made is their final offer. But, in my opinion, it never hurts to ask and see what they say.
You should be paid what your worth
I semi recently had an offer revoked, as far as I could tell they did not like my approach in negotiations.
But in the past I’ve also successfully negotiated 10% increase from the offered salary.
You never know until you try.
I asked for a nominal amount more and they said yes. It was only $5k then, but it cost me nothing and it’s been 6 years compounding on that.
