San Fran is safer for females than a city in any red state. There might be homeless people but at least you have rights.
This is completely false - a guy tried to break into my car WHILE I was still in the car… I’m a small woman so maybe he didn’t see me. This was at a crowded street in broad daylight and nobody said a thing
I’m a woman and I’ve lived in sf for 10 years and I never feel unsafe. Just stay away from the tenderloin/civic center area and you’ll be fine. Best way to get around is definitely by bike since the city is so scenic and small. Do not bother renting a car as you will spend more time trying to find parking than it took you to actually drive there. Walking is great too but there are a lot of micro neighborhoods in sf worth checking out and you’ll just be able to cover a lot more ground if you bike between them. Also, in addition to the golden gate/Sausalito/ferry trip someone already suggested there is a beautiful hiking trail that goes from Golden Gate Bridge to land’s end that I highly recommend on a sunny day!
Rising Star
Definitely do the lands end hike! Go to sutro baths too.
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT stay in Tenderloin / FiDi / or even SoMA.
Not for safety reasons but more so to not end up hating SF like every other average tourist that defaults on staying in those neighborhoods filled with… you know what
Rising Star
I’d recommend staying around golden gate park. Very few tourists, close to the presido and park, close to museums, and great food.
SF is like visiting a 3rd world country
I love San Francisco and have lived in East Bay for 4 years now, but you have to admit there is a lot more human excrement and tents on the street than there should be…obviously some areas are worse than others. Messed up that other cities bus their homeless here but SF gets all the blame though. I just want clean public transport, stores that don’t have to close early because of crime, and streets where I can safely wear sandals 😭
As a female who has lived in SF for two years now but also lived in NYC and traveled to over 43 countries, I can tell you that SF is as safe as any urban city. That means that you exercise common sense (don’t walk down a dark alley at night, avoid certain neighborhoods, don’t be unaware of your surroundings) and you’ll be fine.
The crazy hate on this post in the comments makes me feel less safe than SF itself.
Now, have I stepped into poop on the streets? Unfortunately, yes. I have also stepped into poop very frequently in Paris where I lived for two years and have visited every summer since for the past decade.
Best way to get around: I take Ubers because bicycling uphill is not for me and then I walk as my second option.
Please visit and enjoy this beautiful city. Here are some photos for inspiration
Not safe. Homeless have overrun the city and criminals are emboldened to do as they please without repercussions
I lived in SF for many years and it is NOT SAFE
Rising Star
It’s absolutely safe to walk around tourist spots. I’m a single F and walk around at night alone (not the tenderloin) and have never had any issues.
It is definitely safe! Like others said, avoid the tenderloin just like any other major city there’s always a few blocks where it feels a little unsafe.
I’m a woman who lives in SF alone and feels very safe! You can take Bart, muni, bikes (look up the bike paths) or Uber/Lyft!
Pro
Lived in SF. Definitely not safe.
I personally recommend staying in the Marina in SF and taking day trips to the Bay Area nature places all around.
The city itself should be avoided. Golden Gate Bridge and marina/pier is fine but I would stay far far away from the city’s tourist attractions in downtown, haight st, Alamo, mission district etc especially at night
Rising Star
Completely agree C1. I live in the inner Richmond and frequently walk through the park at night to get to the haight and have had zero issues. The fear mongering is insane on this thread.
