Is the billable hour dead? Also if price no longer a differentiator, are most law firms done for?

😆

I continue to bill hours.

My hot take is that billable rates are going to continue to RISE even though the total number of billers (particularly paralegals, juniors) will decrease over time (due to AI).

like

I see that but I see the number of biller drastically reducing to the point of like maybe less than 50 billers left. You just need the judgment call at that point. Maybe 100 billers because of conflict rules.

The billable hour is more like a loose recommendation to the partner on how much to charge. The differentiator has been and will continue to be excellence of reputation and networking.

like

Billable hour may be dead for charging clients, but it will never be dead as a requirement for associates

How does that even work? No associates left then what

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Thanks in advance :)

Any corp associates looking to move from biglaw to a boutique? My firm remains busy and is looking to bring on a couple associates. We’re all either hybrid or fully remote, and that’s here to stay. 1500 billables and we’re serious about it. Work is primarily ECVC, Outside GC, M&A. Pay is roughly 30% biglaw haircut, with incentive bonuses for hours and originations.

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it.
