No, it is not done for. Most economies are struggling at present and this is also true of the UK, and yes it has significant social problems just like most rich countries do. If you see abject poverty everywhere you must be going to the the wrong areas. There are also astonishing levels of wealth here too and most people in the consulting profession live very far from abject poverty.
I love living in London. It's a wonderful multicultural city where most people are tolerant and friendly. The cultural life is best available anywhere in the world and London has great schools, both state and private. And despite many challenges it still has a pretty good and entirely free health service.
Count your blessings!

Mate, London is on a par with NYC and Tokyo. It is one of the greatest cities in the world. Of course it is an outlier.
The other cities you mention are sadly more 💩 than good. I know Bristol and Oxford very well and the nice bits are a minority and the rubbish bits are huuuuuuge. If you go south of Bristol city centre a housing estate starts and literally does not end until it goes over the horizon (Dundry etc). And the less said about Easton the better. Bradley Stoke or ‘Sadly Broke’ has not gained any more charm over the decades.
Oxford has a remarkably large number of 💩 areas for what is not that big a town. Blackleys is a state. Always has been. It’s not getting better.
I assume Cambridge also has rubbish surrounding area as well given the centre is also terrible and the university is awful.
Brighton is overrated. Edinburgh is utterly wonderful in parts but let’s not forget *trainspotting is set there* so it has its rough bits too. Glasgow is European capital for drug deaths.
Bath does have a remarkably good nice:not nice ratio but is too small to move the average.
The salary you need to be in top 20% of the country is like £52k. We are barely in the top 20 for GDP per capita.
The UK average is not great. We are no longer a rich country. Yes some lovely pockets (and I go to great efforts to live a sheltered life within them: Waitrose, central London, former Oxford college, national trust properties, John Lewis, and Heathrow T5 is pretty much the only place I go) the numbers of people having a horrible time are overwhelming if you look it up.
strange question and o e which has just encouraged all the ignorant racists to whinge about immigration! The fact is that the so called ‘illegal’ immigration is really low and accounts for less than 5% of all migration but it suits the far right to escalate that! The UK is doing fine - it’s challenging everywhere in the world right now and rhe orange madman in the white house isn’t exactly helping, but the UK is building and. Moving in the right direction!!
That’s what happens when you import third world migrants, put your citizens second, have needlessly regulation and censor free speech….
It’s a laughing stock. It’s not Britain anymore…
You realize it’s shit? If I break my leg, and need to get operated asap. Where do I need to go? That’s right, the very public A&E :)

Abhorrent incompetence is the perfect way to describe what it’s like working for a British company. I have worked for several now and never have I seen so much poor judgement and willful outsourcing of decisions to the wrong people. It’s a microcosm of the country as a whole.
OP - Well, that a skills shortage problem. It was much easier before Brexit. We had a greater pool of highly skilled plumbers, electricians and building trades people willing to move here and fill the skills gaps.
Completely disagree I’m sorry
M3 You mean to say the emotional barrier to emigrate for you is too high. I am an immigrant to the UK and currently do not have the energy to relocate my family either. But sadly I am all too aware of the financial cost this decision to stay put is having on my finances.
Don’t know about the abhorrent incompetence honestly. Met some pretty smart and well versed people working in consulting in London. The poverty matter is also subjective imho - it remains a country with a relatively good standard of living, but is definitely embarked on a slow and steady decline like the rest of Europe
Welcome to the party. Never too late
Yep. Boots on ground this week will finish us off once and for all I predict
Don’t suppose that’s happening
‘Abject poverty’ do me a favour - you from Singapore?
Yes, there has always been homeless people in London. I don’t dispute that. But what does this graph tell you about the direction in which the city is going?

Your opinion and how you expressed it sounds like youre southeastern, emigrated in recent 5 years or just never settled
Aon - sorry wait what, illegal migration accounts for 5%?!
I heard D is hiring, might pull some out of people of poverty into misery
I had more self-worth in poverty than at Deloitte. Dire dire place.
