Is this NBC essay correct in saying that these three specific issues are what keeps the ad industry so white?

Thoughts on that dove ad?
Not sure if I have any LA locals here but our agency put tighter this list of events going on today and this weekend. It’s a small list of around 6 events . https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1xx5GaA4GIntUaoiSQtkI5hhNazksesJhZO4IXlgOF60/htmlview Happy Juneteenth hope everyone’s off!

Those are for sure the biggest reasons.
Let me put it this way: if an agency is mostly white, what are the chances of them hiring anyone else if nepotism is rampant, their “culture” is either bro-y or brunch crew-y, and current employees can get their own friends to the front of the line?
“Cultural fit” alone needs to be abolished at this point. You have recruiters who hardly understand the needs of an agency not passing up books from BIPOC creatives because they didn’t “get” their unique POV or side project.
Pretty much. I was at a NY agency, and there was a 17 year old intern. Not yet graduated from high school. Didn’t know if he wanted to be in advertising, seemed to have 0 interest, was there as a writing intern for the summer. So he had this opportunity because his dad knows the CCO. Their families vacationed together. So he left having interned at this large well-known agency, a stepping stone, and won’t even need it. Lucky for him to be connected, and unlucky for the person who didn’t get the spot who really wanted to be in advertising as a creative.
I will say that maybe 90% of the referrals I see are white and they’re prioritized in the hiring system. If recruiting is slow to filter through resumes (which they usually are) it’s definitely a problem because we’re usually able to hire from the first batch of resumes we see.
Witnessed hiring managers state they are waiting for candidate pools to be filled with more referrals (nepotism, VIP candidates from clients or executive relationships) and/or more “culturally fit” (white) candidates.
Yes and emphasis on going to “good schools” that were built by and for white individuals when the reality is you can major in something random and still be a great fit for an agency.
There is a great Harvard business review podcast from January on hiring biases too
Only way for agencies to change is if clients insist on it. Otherwise there really isn’t much motivation to do so 🤷🏽♀️
Definitely part of the problem...
