It’s impossible not to compare hours when everyone whispers their billable numbers like they’re confessing sins. It turns billables into a silent competition where no one ever feels like they’re doing enough. I don’t think it motivates better work. It just creates anxiety and resentment. We all pretend we’re fine, but the comparison never really stops. Do you think sharing billable hours pushes people to perform, or just stresses everyone out?

It obviously pushes people to perform. If you’re stressed, pick up drinking or running or move to a small firm with a 1099 structure

I liked having the numbers as an associate. It helped me limit what I billed as I was already the top biller. But some others hated it. They were usually the lowest billers. I think information is always good to have.

This is an internal probably that I used to struggle with. We’re in a profession of A-types and overachievers (*over*-achievers). Just don’t slack off during the day or week over week, if you take a slow week. Care about learning the craft in whatever your practice is (read articles, learn concepts, etc.). Take ownership in your matters and don’t screw over your team by leaving them hanging. If you can do those subjective things well, the hours will take care of themselves and you won’t get canned. What more do you want? Take the time you save from not over-billing your life away to pour into meaningful friendships or family. You’ll be glad you did 10 years from now.

We used to have the numbers and it was calming to me.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I am lead counsel on a case - we’re suing 3 businesses and my supervisor is a named incorporator of one of the businesses although he is not an officer. He is asking me to bring the file and meet with him about the progress of the case. I reminded him of the conflict and he stated that the conflict was resolved because he also has a claim against 1 of the companies that he recently filed separately. I don’t see how that resolved the conflict…and he’s fully pressuring me to meet. How to respond?
