It's performance review season! Some see this as a valuable check in point with their leader, others as a waste of time, most probably fall somewhere in between. Based on your experience on the receiving end of a performance review, I have three questions:

1) What are some things you appreciate about these conversations?
2) What are some things you'd like to toss in the bin?
3) What have you felt was missing that you'd like to add to these discussions?

Appreciate: when my manager has specific examples. Toss: self-evaluations. I'm not going to write a persuasive essay about why I deserve a raise and pretend it's reflection. Missing: actual transparency about how ratings connect to compensation. This is endlessly frustrating.

100% agreed. Compensation transparency has been something I've struggled with my entire career. It should easy.

And yes, self-evaluations have been a challenge for me. I'm not sure why I'm being asked to evaluate my own performance. There's nothing worse in my mind during a review cycle than when my evaluation and my manager's evaluation have been misaligned. Thankfully, it only happened once under a new leader who I only reported to for a few months and I'm no longer with the company where it happened. It did leave me feeling sour having been with the company for several years and receiving multiple exceeds expectations reviews from the original team leadership.

I’m not from an English speaking country but I am watching a tv show and businessmen walk into a room and instead of greeting eachother, everyone says each person’s first name in lieu of hi, however in my experience working in the states, I haven’t seen anyone do this, it’s always hi or good afternoon or some other greeting first THEN they say their first name. is it also appropriate to omit the greeting?

I’m relocating to the US from an international rotation to work in Galveston. I have never been to Texas and I am trying to find the best spot for my family to live in. So far from reading online it sounds like Pearland is a good option but I have not been able to validate that/ figure out what other options are out there. I would appreciate all advice:
1. Would you recommend living in Pearland?
2. What are other good areas to live in? Safe and would like to be less than 1 hour from Galveston.

Many movies romanticize the sacrifice of one soldier and leave them as a hero, but I have always thought that I hate that. Why would someone need to lose his life to be a hero? I believe the mere fact that we put our life at risk in service is enough to be a hero
