You could be, but you could also be saving you and the company a lot of time and money. The trick is digging deeper. Try to ask specific questions to see if their confidence is backed by collaboration and respect. Sometimes those so-called “gems” just need a better chance to show the difference.
It's certainly possible. There's a line between confidence and arrogance. If you're not able to successfully differentiate the two, you could be shooting yourself in the foot and missing out on good candidates as a result. I'd try to hold off on passing judgment on this front as much as possible. If it comes down to choosing between two similarly qualified candidates, then it becomes more of a factor and I think you'd be right to select the one with the less grating personality. But I wouldn't be quick to write them off on this alone, at least not at the start.
