It's strange. I feel like you're trying out your Cannes party conversation starter.
Wat? The work has never been weirder or more well-crafted? I doubt most current W+Kers believe that
I’m not talking about their work. I’m saying their house style has never been more widespread. I’ve seen so much work that is very good but technically made by, or made to impress W+K style creatives. High craft, surreal, self aware VO, A24 aesthetics, ads made to mimic films or TV. And so many weird products.
I wonder in part if that’s why they’ve fallen off and why we all have. Does that style impress anyone other than fellow creatives? Has it been so influential that it no longer stands out?
I think Mischief has done well partially because they emulate the CP+B ‘what’s the headline’ approach and aren’t too craft obsessed or high taste.
Rising Star
While still quite good, WK has maybe never been weaker. What you on about?
W+K wavered in 2020 and never quite recovered its mojo. Agree with all others on it being in its weakest form today.
I regularly see work from indies that blows me away and I disagree that it’s trumped by the work of big shops. Only major differences I see are budgets, and usually they’re misused to make something offputtingly anthemic or saccharine.
And to clarify, I mean industry wide. Every single day I see some work from an indie that would’ve blown minds ten years ago. Crazy VFX. Self aware VO. Really smart stuff.
Yet I never hear ad people talking about any of it, much less real people, and I kind of wonder if it’s because it’s all clever in exactly the same way.
I think you’re onto something.

always has been
Idk, I truly don't see much that I'm wowed by. For example, I just rewatched the Dorito's El Flicko by AMV 2011. Yes, conceptually it doesn't say much about the brand, but it's so f entertaining and well crafted that you don't forget the brand and can watch it full attention several times.
