for me, a better question would be, which brands support LGBTQ causes outside of Pride month? putting a rainbow in your lock-up is an empty gesture, if you can even call it that.

I’m ashamed to admit I don’t remember exactly which one it was, but a hotel chain, either Mariott or Hilton (think it was Hilton) was one of the first corporations to start LGBTQ initiatives for employees and fund causes all the way back in like the 1970’s. They don’t gloat about it much so you don’t see ad campaigns touting it, partially why I’ve forgotten, but that’s the way it should start- have a genuine interest internally to get involved and back up your pride campaigns with real action

Beauty brands like l’Oreal and Sephora usually do, and they’re also some of the first to really drive forward with including trans folks in their brand rather than just cis-gay people; though to be frank, the LGBTQ community is kinda a huge market for them so, that’s sort of a given
It’s a hard question because when they’re superficial and performative, they get called out on it right away and back off for awhile, I can’t recall any brands that routinely exploit us..
I’d like to see real action come from brands whose audiences aren’t too keen to it. Muscle cars, hardware stores, those kind of brands should really start driving normalizing us to their audiences. But having worked on a client like that myself, they’re often more concerned about alienating their core consumer than using their voices and reach to drive a better society 🥴

@strategist ugh, we have so much work to do, even internally. there’s persisting equal-rights problems even within the LGBTQ community that need to be addressed
What bothers me is that most brands follow trends instead of setting them. LGBTQ inclusivity in advertising was so taboo just a few short years ago, now that it’s common, everyone is doing it. but the “trend” is to run with cis-gay folks, like it’s the “safest” option
so we don’t see much push for trans, non-binary, or lgbt POC in general pushed by brands; it’s like the shallow bRandwagon companies only touch it once other big brands have taken that step
it shouldn’t be a “wait for someone else to start the convo before joining in” attitude, there should be no question whatsoever to including all people of our spectrum, identities, ethnicities, religions, and everyone else in their advertising if they’re going to hop on our pride train. it shouldn’t be a step-by-step “one queer identity at a time” attitude. the problem you just outlined shouldn’t even be up for discussion, but it is a very real problem and here we are 🥺
This is always a tough one as it has become on trend to promote Pride during June for the sake of appealing to younger consumers. Industry with the most performative campaigns goes to any and all clothing retailers in my opinion — rarely any substance or action besides just sprinkling rainbows on a collection.
Brands that care less about Pride the month and more about consistently supporting and amplifying queer voices by who they hire and invite to represent the brand itself.
But as a gay, Dont you kinda like the plus up in June. It’s not only fun to see all the brands double down in June, it’s still important. Sure, I would like it to be all year, but we still need to be loud and June is a good time to do that. I don’t want pride month to become something someone says we don’t need anymore. We do. We will for a while.
SUBARU! And MasterCard True Name. And FCB has a good one for PFLAG.
Also I created this (student) campaign for Poshmark that addresses some issues that queer folks deal with, but isn’t necessarily specific to queer folks. I’d love to hear if y’all have any feedback! https://www.triciaknope.com/work/poshmark
