In my experience, the range is for the role, whether new or not. The top of the range is usually the maximum amount. I like to aim middle of that range or high-mid if I do exceed some of the qualifications.

It sounds like it makes sense
I always thought the top end of the range was how well you meet the qualifications not just the max you can make on the job. I’m confused? My last job brought me on at the high end of the range and I still continued to get raises and bonuses. That was four years ago. The job that I’ve just acquired offered me the low end of the range and I countered with high end and they said yes. Is that not what you’re supposed to do if you think you are worth based on qualifications?

I have the same questions. But someone mentioned it may be the max. The hiring person told them if they get paid max, it’s harder to get raises. Maybe it just depends on the company.
The range would be for the role and not just new hires. I would imagine normally the max is the max of the range for that role. Normally companies are not going to bring you in at that level or else they would be worried you will leave since you likely wouldn’t get raises year to year unless the company increases the band for COL or other reasons.

Thank you for your feedback. There are some people that think that’s the max for just being hired and not for the role, but it might just depend on the company.
Posting salary ranges is becoming more common as some states require them in job postings. So companies just post them so they won't be breaking the law anywhere. However, the ranges are usually so broad that they tell you nothing. They reflect the role, but the upper end is almost always unattainable. That would be for some spectacular performer with astounding experience. Most people probably land in middle, probably the lower side of the middle.

I agree that usually people probably expect to get something in the middle

Ranges are common in what I look for, and I think they generally do reflect the pay range for the role itself not necessarily fit or qualifications

I think majority would agree with you
