I’ve been thinking about career progression and how sometimes strong performance doesn’t automatically translate into new opportunities, especially in large organizations, so for those of you who successfully moved into higher level roles or new departments, what specific actions actually made the difference between feeling stuck and getting that next opportunity?

Visibility matters more when it comes to promotions than performance does. Be extra friendly with the decision makers when you have the opportunity to do so naturally. Don't be shy about discussing your successes, and let your manager know clearly that are you aiming for a promotion, and ask what they would like to see from you to help make that happen.

Reach out to your department’s talent team. Sometimes, you need to let people know that you’re open to a change. You also have to know what you want in the next role.

A few months ago, there were articles about how Juniper Park/TBWA’s hand sign saved the life of a kidnapped girl in a car. But the next day, reporters asked the guy who called the cops about it and he said he had no idea what the hand sign meant, he actually called the cops because the kidnapped girl kept mouthing “Help me.” I’ve heard of agencies exaggerating sales results or click through rates in case studies, I really hope JP/TBWA isn’t exaggerating about, literally, saving someone’s life.
