I’ve had moments where employees expected HR to advocate strongly for them, while leadership expected HR to protect business interests. Being trusted by both sides at once isn’t always possible.
Who do you think HR should prioritize when interests conflict?

The business always comes first. Unless management is acting in violation of laws, employment standards or human rights laws - which make them a liability to the organization at that point.

The problem is it’s almost always the business unless there is a legal basis for the employees claims - in which case that balance shifts. And HR is often the messenger of good and bad news, despite management decisions. We live in grey areas, because policies are black and white - but life is not.

My best advice is be human. Show you understand and empathize, explain why this situation is the way it is, and I like to say I’m happy to document your feedback. Often people just want to be heard and treated decently.

Agreed

Totally agreed !

You work for the business - not the employee. have a side bar conversation with leadership if you disagree with their actions so atleast they’re aware. However you also support the business and show it

I just received an offer from BNY Mellon, and as per their terms and conditions mentions BNY can solely decide to reject or not accept our resignation letter, even though the notice says 60 days? Is it even legally allowed?

SPHR exam- has anyone ever been “randomly selected” for an application audit? This just happened to me and the sheer amount of effort that is going to go into collecting all the documents almost makes me not want to follow through. Since I didn’t finish undergrad, they’re asking for a copy of my high school diploma or transcript and that itself is going to be an absolute nightmare to get hold of. Guess I’m not really looking for a solution here, just venting.

Hi 👋🏻 Would love some support here - looking to build out a bonus structure for a Sales Engagement Mgr role - it isn't a typical sales role - this person will be closing deals but not necessarily securing leads. If they will be scoring leads, it will be organic via conferences, partnerships. Of course, we want to encourage and incentivize this person. Potentially giving then an extra 20-50k bonus potential. How do I build this out? Any suggestions or examples would be super helpful. Thank you!!

I’m currently working with a senior level HR candidate. This individual has a doctorate in business with a focus in HR, her SPHR, Federal, and private sector experience at the singer level, and has a fabulous personality. I’m curious is anyone else having difficulties play some candidates like this? At this point I’m starting to think it’s racial or her sex based of the lack of interest in this candidate. Any thoughts?
