Bain & Company Just don't get the nonsense logic of MBB asking for mandatory Tier 1 MBA while hiring at senior levels. Wonder how the MBA done 10 years back would still be relevant today. Is this just to promote nepotism or their ego?
Why it's so terrifying for them to offer a fair chance to all the talent.

It sounds like someone may have given you some false information! We do not require a tier 1 MBA, or any MBA. McKinsey hires folks from a variety of backgrounds - including those with PhD’s, JD’s, MD’s, etc, and lots of people like me (or the partner on my current study), with no graduate school or MBA at all. Our website does a great job outlining what we look for in prospective colleagues - check it out if you have a chance. Best of luck.

like

This is misleading, McKinsey is still very selective about school for PhDs, JDs, etc.

Are you a recruiter McK1?

like

McKinsey doesn’t do this. I am from a non tier 1 MBA program and I have several EH alums who joined 5-10 years after MBA. For us, what matters more is your experience at that point and not where you went for MBA. Hope this helps.

like

@M1, I disagree.

By and large (regardless of region), it is still predominantly from the same schools. Of course MBB has opened up hiring a bit (such as lateral hires), but not having a top MBA and getting into the generalist pool is the exception, not the norm.

And as for other advanced degrees (NON-MBA)? Sure as hell better be from a top institution too.

And yes APAC is even more institution strict.

Source: MBB alum who worked on recruiting efforts

I'm an experienced hire with no graduate degree. If you have expertise in an area that MBB sees value in, you have a chance.

Asian markets are famous for obsession with top tier education. Also, it’s a supply demand problem too. Markets are not as big as US or Europe while talents supply is abundant thus making it way more competitive to get into top firms like McK or BCG or Bain. Hence education background became a key filter.

like

Lol. I think your case just proofed it’s a demand supply issue. He could probably “easily” find someone who has equally impressive experiences with a top tier education thus making your overall profile less attractive. Anyway I’m not here to make an argument or defend MBB. I came from Asia too and find it much easier to get into top firms (not just mbb but also other firms in general) coz here there are plenty spots while talents are not in surplus.

We hire folks who don’t have T1 MBAs I’m pretty sure.

NAMR certainly hires non Tier 1 MBA folks unless Darden, WashU, Austin etc have joined tier 1 and I didn’t notice. My boss is a Darden alum.

Non Tier 1 MBA hire here! 🙋‍♂️

Umm pretty sure I am not an exception and NAMR region. BCG literally does not care.

As long as you can perform in the interview process that is all that matters. There are plenty like me around me.

MBB is definitely looking to expand talent pool, and the exception nowadays is a name brand company whose experience can help offset lack of tier 1 education, however most name brand firms also have a strong bias anyways in a lot of Asian markets so it’s not like it helps a ton.

We definitely hire folks at the Partner level who don’t have “tier 1” MBAs. Industry/consulting experience and network count for far more at that level.

Not the case in South Asia region which is academics obsessed.

Also an EH with no grad degree and an undergrad degree from a state school. Worked at both McKinsey and BCG (in traditionally post-MBA positions) and could have joined Bain. This is US and Europe.

The problem here is with South Asia region!

Can anyone tell me whats the median salary for Functional Safety Engineer? I had an offer for 140k (it was a 6 month contract position though). I will also be getting an offer internally at my current work place (which is full time) . Since full time offers more job security. I am not expecting them to match or put in an offer close to that amount, but just wanted to get an estimate.

Hello, I worked 1 year as a 'Senior Data Engineer' at 110k base. I then was offered and accepted a role as 'Service Manager' at 155k base where I worked another year. Just recently accepted a 'Data Engineer' job at 155k base but with a larger company (in theory with potential to grow).

I am a Google Certified Professional Data Engineer.

Should I be earning more?

Would I earn more long term if I stayed on as Service Manager?
