Just moved to Durham, NC and currently working at Duke on a Cardiology SDU. Duke does not allow any nurse autonomy unless in the ICU setting. Floor RNs can't start IVs, place NGTs, order labs per protocol (i.e. heparin & PTTs), order pt supplies, DC irrelevant orders, etc. I am not wanting to lose skills and I feel like Duke does not allow nurses to critically think unless in the ICU. Does anyone work at UNC? Is it the same there too? Any advice would be amazing.

Oh wow, I had no idea it was like that there. I don't work at UNC sadly but you could try looking at reviews on Glassdoor to see what you can find there. Best of luck to you.

Who is doing the procedures then? Students from university or a team of nurses ??

like

Depends on the procedure. Med interns or specialized RN teams.

Comforting others:
When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. Because I can’t guarantee that and I really don’t know if everything is going to be ok. I was taken aback recently when a friend told me I am calloused and cold-hearted for not being able to say those words. Is she right? Should I start saying this for the purposes of providing comfort only??
