I don't see a lot of evidence that AI is being used to directly replace any roles.
What I do see, however, is a lot of talk from executives + PR about how it will allow them to cut costs and reduce headcount. And seeming like they are staying on the cutting edge, pandering to investors and boards, and making broad, hand-wavey arguments around automation, is par for the course when management wants to seem more effective at driving the bottom line.
Remember the Amazon "just walk out" technology that allegedly used "AI" to determine what people were putting into their baskets, and automatically charge them for it, without a cashier? Turns out that was actually just offshoring. A thousand Indians in an office building halfway around the world combing through video feeds, doing the work by hand, because the AI tools were only kinda effective.
Ahah yeah I do remember the Amazon’s Just walk out tech fail
It almost feels like offshoring is the bigger issue over AI for the job market
I do think AI is bringing a lot of value but the way executives are using it to drive “efficiency” kills lots of jobs
