Key differences between MD vs Principal at Deloitte? I’m in the recruiting process after 4 years as an MD at Accenture and being told that they’d recommend an MD position. Feels like a step back

They are equivalent levels (equity vs non-equity)

Comp can be very different but so if the risk profile. Principals are naturally more relationship focused, but that is so generalized as to be unhelpful. Think of them as market makers. It is how they innately think. MDs, again generalizing, are master craftsmen, guiding solutions in all its complexity. Both can do both at a high degree of skill. But if you talk enough, the natural tendency can be determined. That is likely what someone responds to.

This sounds like great BS. I wouldn't jump from ACN MD to DTT unless they gave you Principal. What level were you? Unless you were a brand new level 4 I'd push for equity because like they said 'comp can be very different' (read: a lot worse)

Glad I could help, OP!

Why? As an MD we have a broad range of skills and focus, from sales to delivery, to eminence, to practice roles. We are employed instead of being owners. But day to day it is hard to tell us apart.

Ask them if all senior managers go through the MD role.

The answer will tell you everything....

I can answer that question...no, they don’t

There is a big difference between Partner (owner) and an MD (employee).

Thank you both, this helps. Any Comp/Benefits differences that I should be aware of? And if the only difference is equity vs non equity, why would the hiring principal make the recommendation? Should it not be a personal decision?

Should I interpret that as MDs generally get paid less than principals?

No - there are lots of MDs who get paid more than Principals. Principal is a longer term (and riskier) play with most of the benefits vs MD coming from retirement. While MD can be an interim step before switching to Principal, some prefer the shorter term flexibility and not having to take the short term buy-in and tax hits of partnership.

If you do plan to stay for a long time, you can enter the process to switch to Principal. Many have done it.

MDs are not below Principals - i collaborate with and even “work for” some just as I would other Principals depending on their roles.

Hope this helps. It’s a great place to be at the PMD level and the switch from a public to private company can also be a great difference.

Is IB worth the sacrifice of WLB? Obvious pay is really good but are the prestige and pay worth it if you’re planning on only doing it for a couple years?

Currently working at an IRA with great WLB. Honestly I love my job, the firm, and people I work with.

Also doing MBA part time at a T15 school. Thinking about switching to IB but I’ve done my research and I think I would burn out of IB in two years but I might be ok with that for the opportunities after.
