Last Black Friday in our store, I was the manager trying to look calm while the line curled halfway to the parking lot. One of my newer employees whispered, “Should we run?” right as a wave of customers pushed in. I told him to “act natural,” but he panicked, sprinted to greet people like he was announcing a concert. Somehow it worked. The crowd actually cheered, and for a minute, we felt unstoppable.

That’s stressful. That’s how it was in the grocery store on Thursday. My motto: keep your head down and keep scanning

Totally get that—sometimes the only way through the chaos is to keep your head down and power through!

That’s a great story! Great work on his part for making the moment more fun

Love that—always nice when someone adds a little fun to the moment

Wow, sounds like a rush! A positive outcome is all we can ask for 😊

Definitely! Sometimes the rush is intense, but ending on a good note makes it all worth it

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

It may seem obvious, but in my experience partners value trial experience over anything else, so get it however you can. For example, my firm will favor a former prosecutor who has seen the courtroom a lot but has no civil litigation experience (not even a depo) over a seasoned associate who has only second chaired cases with a partner but hasn’t tried a case. Even trying a case and losing gives you credibility at my firm because you still did it.
