Last night I was closing the store when a new hire asked if retail ever gets easier. At that exact moment my phone buzzed with a staff swap request, a supplier delay notice, and a customer at the till saying the promo “worked yesterday.” I laughed and showed her how every shift is part planning, part improvising, part snack-you-eat-standing-up.

I think unhappy customers is probably the most common I’ve been trained to handle. Drowning them in hospitality and be very accommodating. You’d be surprised how much deescalation is needed sometimes

I've gotten really good at handling very angry people who blame me for things that I never had anything to do with. Getting yelled at by customers has become my new normal and I don't even bat an eye anymore. It shouldn't be that way, but here we are.

My job has definitely trained me to handle chaos as if it’s normal. The things I’ve seen in my store really prepare you for just about anything life throws your way. Part of me sometimes wonders if I should have gone into luxury retail—I doubt they deal with quite the same level of chaos, lol.

Have you talked about your wedding with coworkers? I made the mistake of saying I had to leave work a little early one day because I was going to do a tasting at my venue. That starts a debate on why one shouldn’t get married, how much wedding costs & what a waste it is, dresses are stupid because you only wear them once, etc. I haven’t talked about my wedding much, but I didn’t appreciate this. I ignored the negative comments and we moved the conversation along. Not talking about that anymore!
