Last week, I got so deep into designing a presentation that I skipped two meetings, forgot lunch, and didn’t check my email until 5 PM. Hyperfocus can feel like a superpower—until it blindsides you. It’s frustrating because it feels like I'm being productive, but then I realize I’ve dropped the ball on everything else. I’m trying to build in check-ins throughout the day, but it’s a work in progress. Do you experience this too? How do you balance hyperfocus with staying on top of all your responsibilities?

Honestly, I stopped fighting it. If hyperfocus is when I do my best work, I lean into it—and let the rest burn. Not everyone needs to be “well-rounded” if you can be exceptional at one thing.

Agree! Me too. Almost exactly what I was going to say. But I do realize that the success (or consequences) of this strategy can be job/career dependent.

Here’s the thing, really important. Hyper focus is s super power for quality work time, you’re impervious to all the extra stuff so it’s protected, so it can be what it needs to be at its BEST.

Humans are not multitaskers, they are task switchers. Responding to every interruption invades that productive golden time. And every/any human suffers the consequence of piecemeal productivity. It takes about 20 minutes to get back to focus on deep work after a break in stride.

If your organization, manager and team are smart about putting your strengths to good use, they’ll protect and reward how you work, rather than ostracize and reprimand.

I think we ignore something critical if we want quality, deep work, but expect responsiveness too. They don’t play well together.

Fortunately my project is full of TONS of frustrating aspects, so I never get in a flow state and don't have to worry about missing notifications, because I am desperate for any distraction 😄

1. Stop expecting perfection of yourself. All those other coworkers who seem like they aren't struggling with something are just good ACTORS. Nobody is perfect. (But I do try to learn from their acting skills because the great actors do often get the most recognition!) I frequently find out I'm expecting far more of myself than others do of themselves. And they are often impressed by what I'm doing that they aren't even trying to accomplish. In other words, We were balancing each other well. It's good to recognize that and really lean into it when you're lucky enough to have collaborative and complementary coworkers!
2. I did find that stimulants helped me be more efficient at effective task switching without forgetting where I was. They Smoothed out the extremes of inability to focus and hyper focus. But I'm still working on how to maximize usefulness of meds as the effect seems to have worn off. And not for everyone.
3. To some extent, we do have to consider if we're choosing jobs that just don't suit our natural strengths. Are the things you're missing the most critical part of your job? Are missed deadlines catastrophic (911 operator not answering the phone) or superficial (meeting for which you can review minutes and follow up as needed)? Are misses rare or frequent?

But don't listen too much to my advice. Right now I'm unemployed while the actors (from #1) are promoted. There's a wide gap between how things should be vs how they are. 🫤 we just keep trying to move the needle.

But I also don't want to burn a bridge by resigning effective immediately. Would appreciate some insight from other W2 advisors who have moved firms before.

It’s looking like my job is gonna start asking us to return to the office. We have an open office plan and before we wfh FT I would save all my work for my telework days bc I can’t get shit done in the office. I’m having major anxiety about them making this decision. I know I’m not alone that people don’t want to return to the office. My ADHD and the open office just makes working from the office a nightmare and I’m feeling really nervous and kind of resentful.

Just restarted stimulants and already I'm dealing with twitches again. Does anyone else get these? No type of pain or anything just every once and a while my body will twitch strongly. So today was my first day on a stimulant (diagnosed as an adult), and everyone says its suppose to feel like *boom* magic, or normal (?) , I guess. Knowing that is figurative, what should I actually be expecting? I feel mostly the same, I think, though I came in and actually did started my work today. But I mean, somedays I do that...I just don't want to psyche myself out if I'm expecting too much. Or pscyhe myself in if I actually might not be experiencing what I should.
