I’ve been in this place the last few years of my career. It comes from two places.
First, leadership that doesn’t understand their vision of it’s not on paper. To get around the guessing is it right, I try to create routes no more than 4 no less than 2. All slight variations but shallow holes and once aligned I go deeper.
Second, us as strategists. We always lament our role in the process, but we are never bold enough to tell other departments and teams what that should be. We need to stand up, give a process, and lead from that point of view vs waiting to be told what to do.
If they can’t speak clearly, they shouldn’t be in charge. Strategy shouldn’t require translation. It should be the language.
I'm curious about this. When I hear, "We need to future-proof our value story", what I hear is, "We need to make sure in the future our product/service offerings still provide perceived value for our customers who will continue to buy it/them despite market conditions and despite new offerings by competitors." This is actually an existential type of discussion. So I wonder, if you are getting asked to decode that kind of "musings"/outright request, are you in the C-suite? Because that seems like a pretty big kind of discussion to be had at the highest levels, not just strategy for marketing but full-on future-proofing-the-business strategy that is not something that they can expect a draft for in just a week.
