You overestimate strategy salaries 😂
Go shadow one? Or maybe grab a coffee with one and ask them to tell you about all the things that suck about being a strategist?
Good call!
Are you more into the strategy and upfront part of the job vs the production? Do you want more time to think and work independently vs being in meetings and calls all the time? Do you like to be part of a team more than the one running the show? These are things to consider. Can you talk to someone who has made the switch to see what they miss/love?
That’s interesting! The creative team is always like…stay in your lane…but maybe that’s just at my company! Thank you. And yes I would love to pick your brain ☺️
Here’s one thing I discovered - strategy is defined differently by companies. I transitioned from a CD role to UX. My day-to-day is different from many other strategists. Start with what type of work interests you and ask those specific strategists about their roles.
So true. The Economist wrote “nobody really knows what strategy is.” It’s complex, ambiguous, and differs based on your market dynamics, culture, time, team, and competition. It’s a pretty cool role if you like change.
To add - join The 30 Minute University of Planning on Linkedin. They have events BUT a great part to what they do is the Mentors system - they roll out weekly mentors in different strategy disciplines that mentees can meet with for 30 mins.
A great opp for you to use to meet and chat, ask the questions and see if you can map out your next steps into Strategy.
This is super helpful advice. Thank you 🙏
Completely agree with an earlier comment re: try to write a compelling creative brief. I’d suggest doing this on your own time with the next client brief you get - give yourself the same deadline/context/constraints the strategist will get.
(I find that writing a brief based on a made up client / challenge is a misleading view of the job — people always pick a juicy, yet easy, problem to solve for a dream client, like Nike)
That’s really good insight. Thank you.
I think you have to try do the process by answering a brief.
I think you learn very quickly if it’s something you enjoy doing. Then thinking forward to where that will take you and the steps you need to get there.

Julian Cole is running a session on 31 Aug on the below - you could ask during the session:
FWIW I moved from AD - strategy and 100% prefer it.
Next week I'm running a training where I will give you a roadmap for how to break into strategy. https://bit.ly/3sI837J
