Lately I feel like I’m spinning my wheels when it comes to growth. The feedback I get in reviews is always some version of “good job” or “needs more leadership” which sounds nice but tells me nothing about what I should be doing differently. I’ve asked for specifics, but the answers are usually just buzzwords like “be proactive” or “own your work.” It’s hard to improve when no one will actually say what that means in practice. How do you push for useful feedback?

“Be proactive” typically means that you need to follow through on the next steps. What that looks like is going to depend on your level of experience and will change over time.
As a brand new attorney, suggest to your senior what you think you should do next and have something put together for them to review and approve for you to take that step. As a more senior attorney, it may simply be taking the next step.

“Own your work” normally means to take full responsibility for the matter. If it relates to what you’ve done, you’re now in charge of it. That means chasing down responses (internal as well as external), anticipating issues and getting ahead of them as much as possible, and following up for next steps.

A lot of that is client management. As an associate, you often don’t see the texts and calls to complain about X/Y/Z that go into managing difficult clients. Some clients are whiny, some just give more credence to the title in the signature block, and some are chill and just want the work done.

What year are you? I’ve found that most of the things I needed to work on just came naturally through experience. I’m going into my 7th year and a lot of things have just clicked now, and it’s largely just due to not being junior anymore and having seen enough stuff and built enough skills.

“Thank to so much for that feedback. To help me put this into action, could you please provide a specific example of how I can do this better? That would help me tremendously.”

Are you waiting for instructions or please do this on tasks in the matters you are staffed on? If yes switch to working on it before the partners ask. Anticipate what is down the pike and act. See if you can get the work product before the ask in some instances and in others respond with, I have worked on it, here is what I have, I will get the rest by ….

It seems pretty clear: they're telling you to step up and take it to the next level. We're in a profession where not everything can just be spoonfed to you, you need to figure out how to mentally move from Jr Associate level to Sr Associate and then on to Partner level etc.

(1/2) Hi all, based in the UK 🇬🇧, would appreciate your advice on how I could break into product management.

Context: Graduated in 2019 (Finance), 2 years at EY as a business consultant on mix of pmo projects and tech projects where I was developer (data vis, power platform, sql, vba, data analysis etc.). Joined Google on a 6 month contract as a data analyst.

Should I be applying for product analyst roles? Should I apply for strategy consulting? Could I go straight for prod mgmt roles?

Hi peeps!
Got two offers on the table, who love to hear your advice!

- Finance Business Partner for a late stage (Series D/valuation 3B) startup tech company

- Corp Dev analyst role for a listed niche gambling company

The tech job pays 15k more, but from what I can see will be a cluster and super long hours (has EU stakeholders). Maybe a pipe dream, but I want to have a "somewhat" decent wlb while still growing my career toward strategy and finance.

Thoughts on which one is better?

I don’t see how that resolved the conflict…and he’s fully pressuring me to meet. How to respond?
