Who doesn’t love a Better Call Saul inspired lawyer ?! 😋
As someone who was duped into taking a debt collecting job as my first job out of law school at a small firm (it was advertised as a business litigation job and is still advertised that way now that I’ve left and they’ve been trying to fill my position for the past year) I’d say consumer debt collection is up there. We didn’t do anything illegal or unethical, but I had problems sleeping at night. Didn’t feel great to do. The firm did and does other areas of law, like property litigation, probate, wills and estates, real estate closings, but my job was just debt collection as was the person I’d replaced. I stayed because I kept being promised more sophisticated work but instead what happened is I did maybe 25% other things. The other lawyers and admin/paras didn’t respect me nor did the judges I appeared in front of. Now, I’m an M&A and securities lawyer at a large firm.
Yes OA1. Doing this will sharpen your skills to tell who is taking advantage and who is in genuine need. You’ll also deal with your fair share of bullies (but the courts treat you like a bully). A judge took me out to lunch one day and told me I was a young lawyer and needed to get out of that area of law. Another hinted at that in his chambers and made some calls to try to find me a new job. I got yelled at by other judges quite a lot, but I developed a reputation of acting with integrity. I had lots of documents of me showing trying to compromise with people and being fair and reasonable. You’re going to often be the bad guy, but try to get a reputation of being fair and kind if you can because I think it will take you far 😊
Congress.
Wait also … Clarence Thomas
Plaintiffs side class actions. Nothing like getting paid $$$ to make sure that your “clients” can get $5 gift certificates.
$5 they otherwise would have forewent
Foreclosure defense
In my experience, 95% of these firms are solo shops operated by guys who are this close to being disbarred. My impression is they overpromise to consumers and then more often than not commit malpractice. It’s an easy sector for predators to find desperate people willing to cling to any shred of hope they can find.
There was one notorious FC defense attorney in our market who would file either an affirmative case to stop a foreclosure and never plead afterwards, or file an answer in a corresponding eviction and never show up to court. Dozens of cases opposite him, all the same outcome. Expressly barred by the local federal district from appearing in cases. It took close to 7 years from fed bar for him to be wholly disbarred - and yet he was subsequently arrested for UPL afterward.
plaintiff’s first party property (at least in my state)
Without a doubt first party

I agree, those prosecutors are super sleazy! (Says the criminal defense attorney). I’ll show myself out now ….
Immigration 😮💨🙃 The other attorneys and too many entitled clients are making me want to drop it as a practice area.
