I have a shirt that says "pants." That's my go-to.
I’ve been pulled into really big client meetings looking like a scrub and had it be fine. It definitely just depends, but sometimes they want their creatives to look like creatives.
Just be yourself. Every brand culture is different. I’ve had to wear a suit and also had another client say she liked her creatives to look “heroin chic”. 🧟♂️
Rando grooming story: I had an very senior-level client at a prezo for Gillette comment multiple times on my scruff. He left mid-meeting and walked back into the room and handed me the razor we were marketing. A good minute of awkward silence and uncomfortable laughter. I had zero back-up from my CD or account team but I was able make him feel pretty small with a few choice words.
Black / dark jeans, some kind of boot / nicer shoe, a shirt that isn’t a tshirt / hoodie / sweatshirt.
Basically I just step up each piece about 20% in quality and that is comfortable enough for me to be myself and not feel “trying too hard” but still showing some respect.
Ask your CD. I’ve had clients that I had to wear button ups and slacks around, and clients that saw me in my all-black V-neck, jeans and sneaker uniform.
