Anyone work for a private firm but also work as appearance counsel for Docketly? Looking to use Docketly as a tool for marketing, growing my own book of business, and increase hours but not sure how to navigate the logistics of it. For example, conflicts, payment, etc. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I do. But not for marketing or any of the reasons you listed. Just for super easy additional income.

I don’t think it would be possible to do so for reasons you listed because of conflicts. They even ask if you represent clients in areas of law they cover (debt collection/defense, bankruptcy, etc.) and will not allow you to work for them if you do.

Def do more research and be careful. Don’t want to get a bad rep bc of it.

I don’t relate to AA1 as I’ve never looked incompetent and haven’t experienced other appearance counsels looking incompetent either. It is really your job to ensure you understood the assignment and they are not difficult by any means. For example, why would I approach anyone in the courtroom thinking it’s my client? The client doesn’t appear - we do , on their behalf.

You’re only ever really attending PTC’s and CMC’s. If it’s a Motion hearing (which is rare), it’s usually not being defended or anything…you’re simply given instructions on what to do , such as “no objections; notify court we are in settlement negotiations and request a few days before Order submission to allow for parties to reach an agreement”.

Okay. Possibly a stupid question BUT Imma ask anyway.

Can someone just explain how you plan out how much to bill so you can make sure it’s not a mad scramble at the end of year? I’m moving from a firm where I was lacking in any kind of mentorship. No one ever just sat down and explained the most efficient way to track/measure your hours to confirm that you are on track.

Is there just a secret excel spreadsheet that all lawyers have and I just missed the memo???

I’m at a midsize firm in the Midwest and I’ve noticed that we’ve hired multiple associates who all graduated law school the same year. Some are coming from clerkships, other firms, etc., but they’re all on the same graduation year. This feels like it’s setting up a squeeze down the road for these folks with respect to partnership. Is there something I’m missing or is this something that will cause issues down the road?

Can I export a list with all emails I sent for the month? I would like to use it to compare to my billed time to make sure I don’t miss anything. Usually I go through my sent inbox but it has so much extra info so it’s not a quick scan. Plus outlook does weird things sometimes like combines conversations so I only see most recent sent item in that convo. Alternatively, do you have a good way confirming you caught all of your email time?

Hi! New attorney here. Licensed in January 2021.

I have a seriously hard time working all day. I went straight through, so part of it is probably just that I've never worked in an office before, but I have the hardest time getting in all my hours. Anyone else deal with that fatigue? Or figured out how to conquer it?

I wish I could just work all day but it's not coming naturally to me. I walk, I take breaks.... but it's hard
