Looking for a reality check.

I’m a mid-level energy associate at a v50 with experience in upstream O&G, project development and transactional work. I’ve been exploring lateral opportunities and getting a few callbacks and 1 or 2 interviews, but nothing else.

Starting to wonder — is this just the market right now for mid-level laterals or am I missing something? Should I be networking more directly with partners instead of relying on recruiters/applications?

That’s odd. There’s a lot of hirings in the energy space, particularly for midlevels.

Thank you, will do!

Likewise - we are very actively looking.

Are you in Houston?

Yes

Would need more info on your experience and background. Have you been doing this work your whole career, have you made lots of moves?

You should be getting more activity, unless these firms are just not that active

I'm a midlevel in an energy transaction practice in Houston as well and have been getting a TON of emails about positions in your practice areas. Seems like you'd be in demand.

Additional Posts in Big Law

Big law literally saved my life. I was working for the government and being sued by creditors and in a deep, dark place. I wasn't even able to afford my Ube transfer application on my own. I've been at my firm for 3 years now and my life has completely changed. I was so close to declaring bankruptcy it's not even funny. I understand why people rag on it but some of us would be in a really bad place if we weren't here

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

Question for funds folks, since no one is around to answer any questions and I can't seem to find this answer anywhere. Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).
