Always remember MBA is a means to an end. If you know your end, and can get to the end without an MBA or with a cheaper option, usually doesn't make sense to go the more expensive route.
There was an HBR article on how people in our generation is addicted to optionality, your HYP -> MBB -> MF PE -> HSW candidate is simply acquiring badge after badge after badge and overloading on optionality. Sometimes it's good to just know your end goal, stick to it, and find the most efficient path possible towards your end goal.
Thank you! That makes sense. I do think I could get to my end goal of CMO without an MBA
Do you want to be the CMO of a legacy CPG (PG, Unilever, Clorox) or a company recently founded? Both can be fun, but characterized by different experiences, compensation models, and skills.
If it’s the former, the ladder is the same agnostic of school or deferral. You’ll need to play the game more than anything and the $120k fellowship could be worth $1.2M in retirements savings at your age. The path may look like:
Cohort hire into post MBA program > early promo to GM > grind for a decade or two + strong network of table pounders + right place right time > CMO of L’Oreal!
If it’s the second option, experience and school will influence your network and I’d argue two years at Google before matriculating to HBS would maximize your options. You’ll get some risk capital and if you have even one good liquidity event in your career, it’ll make up for the $120k ding in your 20s. It may look like:
Likely only MBA marketer hired at company that year > early promo to Director > poached by faster growing startup for VP role > hired as CMO of {insert DTC or B2B SaaS startup here}.
My friends in brand and product have completely different work experiences. Here are some sweeping generalizations that come from stable vs. growing companies:
- optimization vs. new market entry
- product portfolio management vs. product launch
- PC/MS teams vs. Mac/Slack
Happy to chat more and excited that you have such good opportunities!
Thank you so much!! The second option sounds like it’s more up my alley. I’m going to message you and ask a few more questions :)

In a similar situation, just started at Facebook and accepted to CBS (waiting for MIT and Wharton next week). My thought is I will probably regret not doing an MBA, but now I’m not sure if I should try applying to H/S in R2 or next year.
Definitely understand regretting not going. That’s what I’m scared of
Is what you’re doing in Google the same as what you’d be doing post MBA? A lot of people coming in with post-MBA salaries but want a career switch or pivot.
OP I’m 2 years post-MBA (Kellogg, also had a scholarship) and want your job. Definitely a fun and meaningful 2 years, but I wouldn’t do it if you’re already where you want to be. It’s hard to not make money for 2 years. Especially if you plan on having kids and/or live in a HCOL area

1. What other brands do you have in your resume already, and does Top 3 / Top 7 MBA add value in terms of brand?
2. Are you an international looking to build a career in NA?
3. Are you inclined towards pursuing MBA over Google due to whatever reasons?
Best option for any scenario: Defer HBS
Would you still go if the deferral was denied?
At the very least, you should ask both schools to defer a year because you just started a new job
Google’s offer is called golden handcuffs. Get out of there and get your degree from HBS. You’ll make more money in the long run + will have the flexibility to move anywhere.

What's your post MBA goal?
Lol the case method blows
You can’t do an executive MBA or part time ?
Do schools do that? Switch acceptances for full time to eMBA? I’m assuming I would have to go though the app process again
Howwww omg. Op what was your story?
Sure! I talked about brands that make a positive social impact in the world with corporate social responsibility initiatives. For example, Patagonia and its environmental conservation efforts or Ben & Jerry’s and their commitment to racial justice
