We got my diamond online from white flash. They specialize in the ideal cut for the most sparkle, which was important to me (vs many other diamond cutters who cut to maintain the highest weight). We then went to Long’s to have my ring customized. This ended up being A LOT cheaper than going with a ready made ring. My diamond was of better quality (cut, clarity) and we saved over $15,000 doing it this way.

Blue Nile store in Salem NH

I went to Homsy Jewelers in the Boston Jewelers Buick and had an awesome experience. They were very helpful and informative and no pressure. My now wife loved the ring and we went back to buy wedding bands and wedding day gifts for each other (pearl necklace and watch).

I’d say in general try to have a general idea of what you’re looking for (diamond cut, design, etc.) as it can be fairly overwhelming seeing all of the options.

Ararat Jewelers in the jewelers exchange building on Washington St. They custom designed by engagement ring. Still love it after 15 yrs and no issues.

You’ll always pay more at a name brand jewelry store for what you get. The markups at Tiffany’s or any of the mall stores is ridiculous- advertising, rental space, etc

Following for when it's the right time

Blue Nile. Makes the process painless and transparent.

When buying diamonds, you are going to be offered the opportunitity to get an ethically sourced man made diamond. Consider this... isn't it a greater worth if you know that someone died, that wars were fought, that children were pressed into soldiers or worse for that ring? Lets mark the occasion not just with your sacrifice, but with theirs as well.

And with that, hopefully, you'll seriously consider something made in a lab.

Tiffany's. I know it's expensive. I know all of the arguments against it. But at the end of the day - buying an engagement ring is a completely impractical tradition; it's entirely emotional. 2 years later, not a day goes by that my wife or I regret it. I only planned on buying 1 engagement ring for one person ever, and I wanted it to be the best.

Highly recommend Laura Preshong

Just bought a ring from DeScenza after a recommendation from a friend. Had been to Brilliant Earth and BRAG downtown. DeScenza was a way better experience than either one.
