I will be voting for him for many reasons.
Yes to the military. Order must be restored to save this country and protect its citizens.
Respect for the civil post.
He was far from my first choice in the primaries last election cycle. I do still plan to vote for him, though, because my views are right of center for mostly economic reasons and don't align at all to the democratic party's center at this point. It seems any policy goals that arise to the far left of the democratic party become mainstream within 5 years. Obamacare's individual mandate gives way to support of a single payer system and support for raising the minimum wage gives way to universal basic income.
A candidate whose personality turns me off and who commits gaffes constantly but largely remains center right from a policy perspective is still more tolerable to me than a party that has moved too far left and shows no signs of slowing their shift. The Democratic left's tendency toward calling anyone who disagrees with them on a policy matter a fascist or ignorant also turns me off greatly. I realize Biden is more moderate than most democrats, but I can't help but be concerned with the current tilt of the party and the influence the left would have on him if elected.
On the matter of involving the military, when riots and looting are occurring, I am OK with doing that to restore order. Against peaceful protests, no... but there's been a lot of misrepresentation going on over the last week of rioting as peaceful protest. Peaceful protesters don't fire guns on police, light police cars on fire, and throw molotov cocktails.
He doesn’t represent the outward character or integrity I would expect in a president, but I’ll vote for him all the same. The threat to call in the military, like pretty much all of his tweets, were blown out of proportion as much as possible by opposition outlets. It bothers me that govt is threatening to crack down on peaceful protests and is one of my greatest disagreements with him in his first term. I stand with BLM, I want stringent police accountability, and I’ve marched in the streets demanding exactly that. I don’t like the rioters and wouldn’t shed a tear if they were met with bullets. But I don’t trust govt to make that distinction and don’t believe the military is the right tool for the country’s needs right now.
If you’re wondering why I’ll still vote for him, it’s because my alternative is worse for me. In 2016, I didn’t vote. But I had a much easier time accepting Trump than Clinton. In 2020, I’ll vote for Trump over Biden. But I’ll do so knowing I truly am choosing between the lesser of two evils. My issues don’t lie with the Dem candidates more so than the platforms they represent. Primarily on immigration, gun control, social issues, and trade policy.
Appreciate you taking the time to try listening to the other side. Happy to engage in any discussion you’d like to have.
Havas1. My point is I could do the same with the majority of rifles produced since the 1950s. There is nothing unique about the AR platform that makes it easier to operate than the Remington semi auto wood stock hunting rifle my grandfather purchased in the early 70s. Other than cosmetics. The AR doesn't fire any faster or any farther or use some kind of ammo that is inherently deadlier.
And I could do those same mass shootings with any firearm. Most of those take place in gun free zones where any firearm would be an effective weapon due to the inability of the targets to effectively defend themselves.
I'm a republican (albeit a socially moderate, fiscally conservative one more like Larry Hogan or Charlie Baker) and Im not likely to vote for Trump. I voted 3rd party last year and I'll likely do the same this year.
With that being said, if Biden and the dems continue to push things further to the left...I might have to hold my nose and vote for Trump anyway. Things like universal free college, a broader safety net for immigrants, etc give me some pause...

I know a lot of right switching to the left. It’s probably the people you hangout with or who you’re around cause most of the people my social media people are against trump. It all comes down to perspective and who you associate with

The push for law and order was the right move by Trump and will help him in November. The worst of the riots have been happening in Democratic cities and states.
Most Americans don’t want chaos and rampant crime in our cities. The people living in those cities don’t want it. People outside of those areas don’t want it. A poll showed 71% of Americans were in favor of calling out the National Guard to stop the riots.
The more Democratic areas resist putting a stop to the riots and looting and violence in our cities, the more it will help Trump. The political ads will be very visual and easy to make—look what you will get from Democrats who allowed or even supported the riots and were slow to act to stop it, and look what you get with Republicans who restored law and order.
Absolutely everyone in both parties was horrified at the George Floyd video. Peaceful protesting is also something everyone was supporting. Rioting and looting and violence is another thing entirely.
Trump was right to call out the National Guard and even the regular military if necessary to stop the arson, looting, and violence in the streets.
This one sounds interesting. Wish I could get my hands on a full copy of the study.
On the surface, it seems to support the idea that it's easier to have empathy for that which is similar/familiar, which is pretty well established.
I've never read anything about the link between wanting empathy and experiencing empathy, but it is a pretty fundamental and basic tenet of cognitive psychology that you get what you look for.
Does that bother you?

Yea, I would not want to see that in my neighborhood but also think those people aren’t with the protest against brutality and taking advantage of the situation so it sucks for the overall protest. I think majority are peaceful (from what I see from DC atleast).
Has the movement made you reconsider trump in any way? Is your primary reason for voting for him his economic stance or religious stance?
I appreciate your openness and willing to learn how the other side feels. I think if more people and leaders shared this attitude, we would be in a much better place.
Like many others, I wish Trump would uphold himself with a more “Presidential” attitude. However, I think so many Americans are sick of the way things are they appreciate how “raw” he is. I will be voting for him again. There are too many things the Democratic Party pushes socially that I cannot agree with. Financially and when it comes to the military, I have always fell on the right.
The more we push “traditional” values the country was founded on, the more we see the country go down hill. I recognize things are changing in time but I think there are some things socially that shouldn’t go away. Dems, to me, seem to always push it that one step further. An example for me is gay marriage. I do not care if gay individuals want to be married. I support their right to love. Now it’s about reassigning genders, adding that to text book, etc. We see depression rates going up in children. It’s too far for me. Same with abortion. I don’t personally agree with it at all but understand some early abortions. Now I see many Democratic leaders pushing for the late or full term.
It’s 3:45AM, I’m tired, and emotional from all going on in the world so I hope my rant made sense lol. To sum it up, the left has went too far left for me. Their desire to constantly attack Trump has pushed me further towards him. He was voted in and American people deserve to have the candidate they voted in respected as our leader.
Your statement about dems “Pushing things too far” was perfect. - I sometimes feel this way also and this issue may make me reconsider my left vote down the line actually but not this election.
I guess I personally find Trump to be such a reprehensible character over all who is divisive and harmful. I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that people could still vote for him.
His response to the protests highlighted my above feelings. I wish he took a more empathetic stance to the BLM group and found the call to bring military to dc and other states unnecessary and terrifying.
Thank you for sharing, I honestly was starting to feel helpless not knowing why someone would vote for trump and I genuinely appreciate hearing a thoughtful response.
Voting for the last 30 years for me has been a choice of which candidate repulses me the least. That has been the Republican candidate through those years. The reason changes each election cycle and I keep hoping both parties will nominate better candidates but I'll vote for Trump again this cycle. He may be rough and loud and I really wish someone would edit his Twitter feed before he posts anything but he still appeals to me more than Biden.

There's a good Atlantic article on this.
Sane Republicans support Trump because it's easier than opposing him. And, after long enough, they start to think that they're right to support him.

This perspective and comparison is the scariest part to me which honestly, led me to this post and wanting to understand the republican perspective on this.
People who plan on voting for Trump are the same folks that voted for him in 2016. Regardless of the economy or a pandemic that has taken 100K lives. The economy is turbulent and unemployment rate has sky rocketed.
Why do they still support Trump you ask? Because Liberals. That simple.
I voted for Trump last time. I won't be voting for him this time. People learn and change their minds and views.
As a conservative/libertarian, I'm happy to admit that the POTUS is not a conservative and is generally a divider-in-chief. I do not vote because I am in the military (there is an old tradition that officers should not vote, but many choose not to follow that tradition), but if I did vote, I'd have been supportive because of his administration's aggressive economic growth goals.
I was happy to see my desired outcomes come to fruition: African American unemployment rate at its lowest ever in history, record employment rates and market growth, and finally someone with the guts to call out the threat China poses to the world and new steps taken to compete with them.
Now, if I were to vote (again, which I won't), I would not support him after having heard Secretary Mattis's POV. However I also don't think I could support VP Biden.
Very interesting to hear this perspective and as someone who believes this as well, very comforting to hear.
Thankful he’s failing so miserably at everything.

Reasonable. Keep in mind Johnson did in the ‘60s
Are you concerned that trump could use this as an emotional response to criticism?
The best welfare is a job.
Not everybody can always have a job. For that, other welfare is needed.
