Get to know them on a personal level. Ask what makes them tick. Tell them what makes you tick. See where there is overlap and what opportunities that could bring. Remember they have just as much to learn from you as you do from them - but let them teach you everything they know. Also.. get the goss!
Some conversation starters could be…
Probing on recent updates in the business - finding out exactly what it means for your team , exercising curiosity and interest in the business. There’s a fine line between just coming across as nosey but if you want to progress it’s good to understand how and why decisions are made, and exactly what they mean for you and your clients.
Asking them to talk you through things they are working on - recent deliverables, pitches. Listen to how they explain them, soak up the vocabulary they use, how they present.
Asking their advice on certain situations. Where you can, go in with what you think the solution is. Get their take on it. Ask if they have done anything similar.
Is it possible to not have them weekly? I have a team of associates I have check-ins with biweekly— I tried once weekly for a while and it just was too much for them to actually be productive.
Take the time in between to analyze the work you’re doing, the goals you have, and frame your conversations around what you can do and/or improve on to make the two connect (the current work and your goals). Focus each week around a specific set of tasks or responsibilities and change it each check in.
