Looking to buy a vacation home on the west coast not in a major city. West coast so it doesn’t take too long to get there. Could consider other areas, but don’t want to spend too much time traveling there. Budget is under $700k for 3 bedroom, at least 2k sqft. Any ideas?

Modesto, CA falls in your budget but I hear about it too often on Dateline so I’m super biased about why I didn’t put it on the list

funny

Lol the crime rate. All I can think of is Scott Peterson. 😬

- Palm Desert for heat
- Big Bear Lake/Fawnskin for snow
- For more “SoCal” in that price range- Escondido, Carlsbad
- Santa Maria just south of San Luis Obispo
- NorCal - Sacramento, and I know there’s some lake called Clearlake but I’ve never been there

funny

I would steer far from Clearlake. Drug epidemic up there and the lake is filthy most of the year.

Phoenix?

besides the home, what type of city characteristics are you looking for? mountains? near ocean?

Can be near the ocean or in the mountains. Ocean might be too $$. Was considering St George Utah for access to national and state parks. St George is a 6hr drive, so that’s the max travel time I’d consider. Could do up to a 2 hr flight to get to the Oregon area. Ideally won’t burn down due to fires and climate change.

Check Long Beach, Washington

We all know how inflation can derail our Retirement Planning dreams!!Though it's better to start investing as early as possible, but HEY, all is not lost even if you start little late. We all have our family responsibilities when we start our career, so "INVESTING FOR SELF" takes a back seat.
Just a perspective, even if someone at the age of 45 years starts investin for his retirement, he can decently manage the same with discipline and regular investing.
Happy to discuss with anyone on this!!

But what about mega-backdoor Roth IRA? I'll admit, I still need to read more on it.

Just curious what investment vehicles you're using to get to FIRE.

First gen, first year lawyer here. What do you do when you have family members who expect money from me every paycheck. I try to stand my ground but I get guilt tripped, especially when those family members were there for me.

It’s getting hard to save money when there is this expectation that I must give them money every paycheck. It feels like I have nothing for myself.

However I note that there was withholding of some amount in 2017-2018 and 2019 tax years ( withholding from comission received from insurance commission from lic and United india)

I have not filed 2017, 2018, 2019 return as my total income was less than threshold

Is it possible to file return for 2017 , 2018, 2019( all r in refund) now without paying any penalty?

From a financial standpoint in this market, which would be a better approach in Austin -

1. Buy a ~8-850k house that meets most of our ideal criteria (size, schools, interiors etc) to stay long term

2. Buy a ~5-550k house that’s not ideal with the plan of moving into an ideal home in 4-5 years when kid is ready for school.

How easy is it to get a mortgage for the second home?

We are moving from Vegas to Sacramento and we are not sure how long we would stay in the new area. Thoughts?

Who is still in denial about a housing correction? The Fed just made another .75% increase. Powell said they won’t stop until inflation is 2%. He also said a recession would be better than the consequences of unchecked inflation. He announced he will bring rates to a “restrictive level” until “the job is done”. He said that labor demand needs to soften (ie: layoffs). He very explicitly said he wants to slash demand and that housing needs a “correction”.
