I’m still hungover from Saturday night.
If it’s all about salary then why can’t those of us who drop our rates still not land gigs?
It’s ALL about SALARY! The longer you are in this biz the more you make. And when the BDHC calls one of its agencies and says to cut overhead, those with the most experience = high salaries are targeted. Happened to me 4 years ago. And I’ve never been happier freelancing. Agencies value my experience when they hire me and don’t care about age.
I started in the industry late I’m very old by agency standards lol and I’m not super worried about bc agree re salary BUT I know I have to work harder to show i understand culture etc and I keep up my appearance
I’ve had no issues with my day rate since freelancing. My previous agency where I was on staff took issue with my big, fat well-earned salary when it came to layoffs. So much better off now.
How can it be about salary? Don't you people realize you're working for peanuts? I recently saw an Indeed listing for a salary comparable to what I was making in 1991. Is it any wonder you can't make ends meet in today's economy? Wake up!
Both - salary is high; and perception that younger people have newer/fresher ideas (E.g., “digital natives” know social and digital better than GenX). There can also be less work/life balance for older people with kiddos who need more flexibility and less stress from work.
I think it is both. Older people with a good salary wanting security are more of a (perceived) long term burden than a younger person who is over titled and over paid. Younger people will jump agencies more easily and are easier to lay off without discrimination. Ever notice when they lay off older folks there is proof paperwork and a few younger people sacrificed to ensure no one sues? No one wants a long term older person skewing their insurance premiums even if they will work for less.
Does anyone else get anxious with every salary increase? I know they give them to show they appreciate my work but I feel each time I’ve been given an increase, the target on my back gets bigger. Would it be wise or foolish to say “thanks, but I’m good” the next time salary reviews come around?
Think it’s more about being smart about the bracket you ask for in your job x number of years from now. We don’t always make more and more until we hit the grave
