I’m only 8 months in and already feel this way lol. I really struggle to see if there is any real value that our work contributes to the world. The only positive I feel about the consulting path is the money, and from what I’ve seen here that’s basically it for most people
I feel the same , couple months in. But at least the work huron does is helping researchers
Edging in on 4 years and feel the same exact way. Currently getting crunched for a go-live and questioning if the money is still worth it.
Nice to know I’m not alone, but then again I feel like more people feel this way than would care to admit.
Maybe try to find a niche that you at least enjoy more. Mine is FinTech; super boring, but I say “huh, that’s kinda cool” a couple of times a month.
After being benched for 4 months straight outta college with no first project, I’m already looking at other firms/jobs and getting interviews. If there is something else better for you out there or if another firm can give you what you want faster, don’t wait around! Start applying and go for it.
What firm?
Felt this way when I was at a big 4 for a year, was unfulfilled and treated like a number earning utilization. I got sick of it and switched to my current role and literally wake up excited each morning for work. Sometimes a change of environment is what you need to feel purpose again!
So I was an ERP consultant doing SAP ABAP, now a consultant at Kinaxis deploying their own concurrent planning software RapidResponse for F500 companies! Wouldn’t trade it for the world. If you’ve got ERP or supply chain consulting experience it’s awesome!
I think about that sentence a lot, but I also think some jobs are a gateway to other dreams.
Could not relate more…
Really comes down to the content and team. When you have both, it can be like running on nitro for your professional life. One or neither can be horrid in my experience
Currently on a case with a really fun team and an insanely cool client 1) handling a problem that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world, 2) owns a system that everyone consciously knows about, and 3) is in a topic I’m really passionate about. The hours are terrible, on the order of 15-17hr/day, but it isn’t wearing on me at all.
Consulting helps you develop useful skills that are valued in industry, you could probably find a remote role with comparable pay if you look hard enough.
Also could be worth the investment in a few sessions with a career coach to help you figure out what you’d be more interested in
I feel exactly the same! Almost 4 years for me and every day is a struggle
100% feel this way and feel stuck because of student loan debt - would love to switch to more of a passion job that pays left but feel like I’ll never be able to pay off debt if I do.
Go be a pilot
I felt this way when i was in tax consulting but made the jump to management consulting where the work is far more interesting. I learn something new each project (new markets and variety of case types) which keeps me going but the hours are terrible and work is usually very challenging. I frequently question how long i can last but at the end of each case i feel rewarded. Key takeaway is get into the type of consulting work that you find interesting and a good segway into your life after consulting.

4 years in and I am already seriously considering an industry change
