AMA- consulting/ corporate strategy/ M&A

Hey all! While I stay in quarantine to assess a potential COVID exposure, I figured I’d host an Ask Me Anything for the above topics/ career tracks.

I’m a 27 year old manager, who’s been in consulting for 4.5 years, directly out of college, in Accenture doing M&A strategy for Financial Services & Life Sciences. I’ll try to answer to the best of my ability (mostly everything except client details ofc).

The situation: New CPG client is running media on social and digital for the first time and needs to answer to higher ups, “Is it working?”

However, there are no historical or category benchmarks and we are in the brand awareness/audience building phase; they understand that we will do retargeting later. They do not want to drive online conversions on their website. We will have some sponsored product advertising (ex. Instacart) later on.

What am I missing??

Has anyone ever gone from a mid tier to a b4? I have more recruiters and partners in my linkedin dms everyday and I guess they actually have me considering it.

Anyone have relevant experiences they want to share?

Are you expecting to have a lifelong career in finance? If not, what you are hoping to do eventually and are you preparing for the transition (taking any classes, reading specific books, etc.)?

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

Worked at big 4 for 3 years, left as a senior, currently working at a mid size firm for a year but not entirely happy with my career. What’re some career paths and opportunities for those with 4 years in tax? Want to stay in accounting but don’t know if I want to stay in tax

Would anyone consider taking a ~10k pay cut to join a corporate strategy team at a large company? Consultant planning to apply MBA next fall and I’m not sure how that progression would be perceived

How do you guys use your internal network at your firm to exit into your dream job?
Do partners or sr. Managers help you get introduced or refer to firms that interest you?
How should I go about it?

Soul Searching . . . Any recommendations on courses, programs, books, or methods that will help with career soul-searching?

I have been doing consulting for a few years post MBA and have not felt a sense of fulfillment. I’m exploring what I want to do next and would love to know what has helped you.

I have 5 YOE in Analytics... always thought I wanted to be a DS, but every job (even the junior ones) required experience in ML development. Though I am part of the ML project, I'm not the person develop the model. And I have a hard time when the interviewer ask about how I develop the model and what hyperparameters I tuned. I know the thought process and stuff but 'I' wasn't the one who did that part in the project. How to convince them that I could do the job without taking credit of others.

When we do out of scope audit work for clients and get to bill it at 100%, even if it is easy work and low fee, should the people, mostly staff and seniors, that do that extra work get something extra too?

Currently having 12.36lacs CTC, YOE 8, Business analyst skill, other skills power Bi, SQl, SAP Hana, before 1st round informed recruiter expected CTC as 20lacs not aware BOnus included in IQVIA.

Has anyone taken the google /coursera data analytics course?

Do not put anything on a resume that you can't talk in detail on especially if you claim to know this topic. One you get caught having stuffed your resume with jargon and hype word but don't know anything or very much about it, the interviewer will start probing hard to find not discrepancies and soon you're resume will be in the round filing cabinet with a big no written on it.

When asked about salary expectations for internships is 50k-60k a good range for engineering roles an ok amount to ask for. I got 60k in my last internship and kind of want to ask for more but I don’t want to get rejected for asking for too much when filling out an application. Any thoughts

Finishing up my masters in Cybersecurity. Why do I get an auto-decline from MBB? I usually get to the online/HireVue interviews for every other company (finance, consulting). I have a high GPA and a lot of research experience in popular fields (ML/DL). But for MBB I get a decline the next day. Is it because my undergrad is from abroad and non-target? Am I missing resume keywords?

Recently moved to LA, and landed an internship as a digital marketer. The pay is $400-$600 every month and it’s on a bi-monthly pay. I would be working 20 hours a week minimum and driving an hour there and back. This would be my first internship but I’m afraid it’s not worth the pay. Any advice?
