Making a move from law firm litigation to a in-house product counsel role and can’t help but second guess the decision. Worried that I’ll miss certain aspects of litigation and product counsel will be end up being more replaceable by AI. Can those who made the transition share how that worked out for you?

Congrats! I made the switch from litigation to product counsel and it’s been great. I sometimes miss brief writing, but being a product counsel is way more interesting and I feel like I’m constantly learning. I also love that i don’t have to deal with the same dumb discovery disputes. No regrets

I am very, very happy with my switch from litigation to pcounsel. I do miss the strategy of litigation, but my product has enough litigation where I’m supporting the in-house litigators, that I get a taste of that. But working with the product team, instead of fighting over stupid discovery stuff, is way more gratifying.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I hate about litigation…

IMO as much litigation work will be replaced by AI as product counsel work. Pretty soon we’ll have AI that can draft every filing involved in litigation and do anything but be a lawyer with a license that can appear, proof read/cite check AI materials, and enter prompts. Not much of what I do as product counsel is being replaced by AI as of yet, but certain in house things are being streamlined by AI for sure.

I’m a product privacy counsel in medium tech (lol). No way is my job replaceable. Certain parts sure — today I used ChatGPT to write a draft email for me. But on the whole no. There’s a lot of creativity, complexity, and judgment because the position is both business work and law. Plus issue spotting (so many random info dumps followed by “is this compliant”), identifying missing information, relationship building, etc.

Also, don’t use ChatGPT for confidential legal work.

I've been working at my company just over a year and am still waiting on my 1 year review where a raise was to be discussed (other EA got raise at 1 year review and most raises happen at yearly reviews). However, company have just changed their policy to only review salaries in Jan (change came in after my year mark). I'm having a lot of trouble pinning my manager down for my annual review to even discuss my performance, let alone the raise. Feeling the undervalued (and now underpaid):

My AD coworker (not currently my partner) just got hired at a new agency and wants to bring me along as his writer. I'd love to join. He told the recruiter at that agency about me and sent my book. I also have another former coworker (creative) who put in a good word for me.

Should I reach out to the recruiter, too? Or is that overkill after two recos? I don't want to be bothersome. But I do want to show interest..

This all happened on Friday, if that matters. Thanks!

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?

like

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.
