I've been interviewing with some companies, and now I have to decide between JPMorgan Chase and Globant.
Globant is more innovative, and has remote work. I will enter to work with a Sillicon Valley startup based in San Francisco. The tech stack is React, Nextjs, AWS, and a serverless architecture.
JPM is semi remote, and less innovative. The tech stack Java, SpringBoot and AWS. But I'd do more migration tasks, like dockerize projects and pass them to kubernetes. What would you choose?

What is the hiring process of persistent systems? I am done with one technical round and got an email with subject line as 'feedback' but in mail it is written that they will get in touch with me. What does that mean? Will there be more technical round or managerial round?

You get a six figure salary and stock in return...
Sure, low six figures in an area with rents around $6K/month and high income tax. What a deal. Also, stock is maybe worth a year's salary then gets cut in half by taxes (so 6 months pay) after working 24/7 for years until exit. You never earn enough to buy a house....maybe not even save enough for a down payment.
Man, I really have an opposite experience from yall. I have a kiddo and animals, 100% remote, good pay and benefits, and I feel like my work is cozy ( getting in is quite difficult, I agree totally and layoffs are terrifying). Those sound like toxic companies, not that it’s the job.
( I’m not in FAANG)
I’d rather not say, but it’s a late stage startup. I’ve worked at a few other companies before this with similar experiences — good colleagues, flexibility, good managers. Again, none in FAANG, but US based
Ugh, I totally get it! The whole software engineering game feels like a never-ending hustle for nothing in return. The constant fear of layoffs, toxic coworkers, and being replaced at any moment is so exhausting. And the bosses just don’t care. It’s brutal, especially with a family to support.
it's the same in the UK. They expect unpaid overtime and to do everything from documentation to deployments and everything in between and NOT on a 6 figure salary. Whilst being an expert in multiple tech stacks and putting up with toxic staff. Then as soon as things became tight I was laid off. So I sued them.
It is all a due to the current business cycle, seen it three times now, aggressive cost cuttings, fight or flight, mindless offshore hiring sprees. same story different decade.
This is absolutely true, but here's the kicker: it's not just software engineering. Every industry is set up this way, our entire economy is built around maximizing profits for owners while workers are given nothing, just squeezed for every drop of blood, sweat and tears until there's nothing left at which point they can be discarded and replaced. This is the lie of trickle down economics that Ronald Reagan shoved down our throats and ever since then the 1% have siphoned TRILLIONS from the working class without a penny of it trickling back down. America bought it hook, line and sinker and now the middle class is all but non-existent. There is only the owners and the owned.
Principal Engineer 1 are you looking for anyone else for your coop? I’m currently working as a SE but am actually switching to a government computer forensics job. I still have a passion for SE though and would love to supplement my government job.
and u didn’t even mention 24/7 oncall that can be up all night, for the more intense companies like amazon
You sound like a joy to have on a team.
The grind you’re describing is not exclusive to software development, or even just the technology field. What you’re describing is, and has been business for the last 75 years+. While it may feel and seem daunting and overwhelming at times, only you are in control of your any time, you could quit and start your own business, do freelance work, or even change your career.
If I’m being completely honest, it sounds as though your attitude toward your work might have something to do with you getting extended from contract. I’ve been around some very smart and talented people that had crappy attitudes, and 99 times are the ones that did not get their contracts renewed.Nobody likes negativity and toxicity in the workplace. Do you have a job that you are hired to do, and you can either use that time to do that job and fine-tune your skills to do something else, or you could use it to do the bare minimum amount of coding and complain about the work because someone else is making more money that started the business. The choice is yours.
"Hey, my life is easy, so stop complaining about yours" would have been much quicker and required less characters than all of that. This is the type of efficiency we look for as software engineers.
This is why I'm happy to be a software engineer outside the US.
I earn less (55k in Europe, would be 100k dollar in US), but before 9 and after 5 I am not looking at my phone.
It comes in waves. Everyone is concentrating on cost cutting now similar to how it was during the financial crisis. Eventually it will pivot back as the need for more advanced experience and higher quality is needed.
Totally agree! I am at a stage that I feel I have paid my dues and want to change my role. It’s even more challenging when you have growing family and they need your attention as well, unlike those days I could code day & night with no other obligations. I am just holding on due to the poor job market while trying other aspect of tech with a more balanced life with good pay.
What other aspect of tech?
You are forgetting a lot, like getting away with stuff that no other orgs get away with i.e. compare it to someone in a Sales org etc. Be in on time, quotas, droning on in meetings etc.
Also I hope you are getting compensated well where you are as it is a tough job, and we get paid accordingly. Add to that the general better situation tech has in terms of offices etc (at least they did depending where you are) and I'd say its certainly got the pros to offset the cons.
Just a little background I was in finance for years before switching over to engineering, speaking from experience when I say I literally envied the life devs had, so much so that I jumped in.
Follow up comment: The hubris and arrogance of a bunch of folks who spend hours on YouTube to find five extra commands that you weren’t made aware of and then egg on everyone for knowing more than others is sickening.
It isn't fun on the hiring side either. I had a candidate that was a perfect fit, but he required 100% remote. His dog has anxiety and he couldn't be away from him. I wanted RTO with hybrid flexibility. He lived 10 minutes or less from the office.
I'm 100% remote because I have a literal farm, and a cow might need an injection to keep it from dying. Can't do that from the office.
I read that Zuckerberg is going to be replacing a mid-level software engineer role with an AI model this year.
Hah! That’s what we need. Junior developers with unlimited energy and unlimited stupidity. I wonder how that is going to work out. Technical debt tsunami coming your way soon.
There is no age at which the median American:
- earns >$60k/yr
- has >$105k saved for retirement
Compared to the median American, software engineers have it made. Not that there are not downsides or that software engineers don't have valid concerns or problems, but just adding some perspective.

I'm a software engineer, been underpaid for years and not far from the average guy, but those are sad statistics. Goes to show you there's always somebody worse off than you.
LOL that’s most work, but without the high pay.
One of my co-workers is a s/w engineer. He says his side hustle is always looking for a better job. He has been in his current position for a little over 3 years, and is getting cabin fever. He has over 20+ years experience, and has never stayed with the same employer more than 5 years.
I worked at a fortune 50 company for almost ten years and got a 20% raise overall in that time. I switched to a new company and immediately got much better benefits, stock options, 150% pay increase, and less responsibility. That's just how the job market works.
So entitled

Accurate. Many people living up to the high maintenance developer type cast. What the developers don't realize is that in start up management circles there is advice given to make developers think the only job that needs to be done is write code. This is because this the one thing only they can do, meanwhile everyone else does all the rest of work to bring in money and get the code to the user.
Go out and use your software skills to get a SaaS product off the ground. Become a net contributor to society by hiring people.
If you are a capable SWE - You should look at non-standard SWE-like roles which are in high demand and semi bullet proof. If you are a good programmer, you can learn to program PLCs. You can learn to program Building Automation, System Automations. Myself, I wanted to be a SWE, I went into the AV Industry. Paid at 75% of standard SWEs, but a HUGE piece of mind being a big player in a small industry that cant get offshored easily as the AV industry decently tries protects itself.
Thank you for this invaluable advice
The top 30 H-1B employers hired 34,000 new H-1B workers while laying off at least 85,000 workers. In the US, we graduate around 17,000 computer engineers annually, yet we bring in 65,000 H-1B workers. Can you imagine what would happen, for example, in medicine, if we graduated 21,000 doctors and brought in over 100,000 each year? This is why being an engineer in the US can be so challenging. Just ask any engineer over 50—if you can find one.

Jesus..that explains everything...in Europe they make half but keep their job forever and have to worry about nothing as the state and job provide everything. I read that they getting vacation on unemployment money they have to worry about nothing not their kids etc.
This is raw capitalism in its purest form . WHy pay an American 65k when you can pay someone in India 10k to do exactly the same thing . All that matters is profits not disposable people and their kids they take care of from that job
I hate how unsafe places have become from homelessness but at the Same time I celebrate the win of Copa doing nothing because where are they supposed to go If they have nothing???
I've met cops now and they ask why Is your registration so expired? And you say I've been applying for 6 months and all I got was 4 hours of work a week .they just say I'm really sorry I joo things get better . I appreciate that they and some states are starting to wake up and see that lots of people try and try and get nothing in return . Went to school graduated got experience and get nothing . F it then do the best you can and never ever be ashamed of anything If you are trying . It isn't you fault
Notice how whenever you call custome service they are all in India? Call center jobs used to be so easy to get but WHy pay Americans when you hire overseas and pay them pennies and no benefits instead
