Congratulations on securing all these offers. Well done! I would advise to choose based on the people you meet and who you clicked with the most. In the end it’s a People business and if you don‘t like the culture / your colleagues, any other considerations won’t really overcompensate that. Happy to chat if you want to send me a DM. I’m a Partner in Chicago.
FWIW OP, I would choose McK over BCG if I had to do it again. Echo a lot of what’s been said here by other BCGers at the firm. For better or worse, there’s really one type of person who succeeds here and if you aren’t that type then it’s a only matter of how long until you leave.
I also think McK is also way better at alum relations than we are which is key to finding your opportunity after consulting. Of course, they’re not Bain, but still first class.
Never leave Deloitte!
I can’t speak to the other firms but some minor points to note about BCG—
1. We try hard to staff in your local region (ie <2 hour flight), and are able to do so often unless you choose otherwise.
2. Our expense policy is great (which matters when you travel often)—first class flights for 1.5 hour or longer trips as an example.
3. We partner with a lot of great non profits (gates foundation, Obama foundation, wildlife conservation funds) to enable you to work there for a period of time if you so choose, and then return to BCG.
4. We are picky about the types of work we choose, actively avoiding work that could cause damage to our reputation or work that conflicts with our values.
To #4 I’ve seen BCG take commercial projects that weren’t in the client’s best interest while I saw McK turn down phase 2 of a project i was on because they didn’t think it was in the client’s best interest. I worked on one BCG project that Bain had refused to do and BCG agreed to do (and should have never done—killed the team and the client CEO proclaimed it a “failure”). Was also pushed at BCG to suggest major changes to a client’s operating model and org structure that we couldn’t show having any benefit while introducing substantial risk just because “the client isn’t paying us a lot of money to tell them to keep doing things the way they’re doing them.” McK wouldn’t have done that.
Agree with BCG’s better travel policy. Depends what’s important to you, I suppose...
For anyone curious, this is not uncommon. If you can case well, you’ll get an offer from 2+ of the MBB firms.
Over 50% of my BSchool classmates who received one offer received multiple.
Those who can’t case well receive 0 offers.
So what you end up with is a population with multiple offers, and another population with 0 offers. “Offer inequality”, so to speak.
Pittsburgh is not an easy place to live either
I’d personally go to Bain... I like the people there!
Congratulations. Wouldn’t go wrong with any one of them. I also had all 3 out of Bschool. I picked BCG based on the people I connected.
M2 - absolutely correct. The MBB and even the D S&O summer interns all stood out early on and many who had the profile for an M7 came to a lower ranked school because of $$ (that too tax free!)
Given what you’ve written, you should pick BCG since you jive better with them. McK’s staffing model has become more regionally based (though still with plenty of opportunities for global projects and rotations) so I wouldn’t consider that a major differentiator vs. BCG for international opps. If we knew more about your professional goals maybe the answer would be different.
Prioritize people first and location second (both of which heavily factor into your happiness and the industries you serve). E.g. don’t come to Chicago for hi tech or pharma work. For most, the other considerations are rather inconsequential in comparison.
Is this your baby typing?
Mind you I got banned because of my 1 year old lol
BCG or Bain
McK is definitely a step above if you want international opportunities. It’s a truly global staffing system, for better and worse.
Join the firm in the city you want to live in. If you don’t care about location, join McKinsey. It’s better
Ah, my fault, I assumed we were all talking about NA haha
Asl?
You have very low standards G1.
Deloitte is the most exclusive, more so than Harvard
Google “<firm> partner prison” and see if that informs your choice.
Google “<firm>” and see 1) how many search results pop up 2) how often this <firm> is talked about in the media
I also got all three and chose McK - happy to chat if you DM me
McK hands down
#humblebrag
Maybe, but considering this is a consulting app with many people from different backgrounds and company experiences, I'd say OP's question is pretty relevant.
You single OP? Looking for a sugar baby?
I make a real mean deck if you know what I mean.
I can really really facilitate your deliverables
P1, I volunteer as tribute to take C11’s place post-canning if you can help me make it happen 😁
Congrats! I work with alumni from all 3 firms, McKinsey people are definitely the most impressive.
Damn son
Good for you! McK would be my pick.
