Question to You:
What is the role/ title?
Do you have a range in mind, already?
Questions You Should Ask HR:
- What is the range of this position?
If they deflect; add 15k to your desired range - and then follow it with - but please note this initial “number” only reflects my limited understanding of the role and all associated responsibilities based on the job description. This range may change based on what I learn in the interview process.
Then ask,
Do you have any initial concerns with this range?
That will get them moving.

Not a fan of deflecting … it shows a level of an inability to do some basic market research… as well as you should be able to give a general range … even if you’re off 20k … you’re still not out of the water … until you sign the offer
I never give a number. Why negotiate against yourself? I usually deflect and if they pursue more aggressively I will literally just say "I don't want to negotiate against myself"
I told external HR my number first went through the interview process and they lowballed me by 30k from what I told them. I said thanks but no thanks. I wasn't going to go to a lower tier bank for a 10% raise. Just because you give then a number that's too high doesn't mean they won't try to offer you a lot less.

Facts! I’ve done the same thing.
Depends on the level. Associate? VP? ED? Get money going in because they tend to be cheap once you are in. Wells Fargo pays more
