Are these appellate groups profit centers or just mostly prestigious to have?

like

Definitely not profit centers, and in some cases not even terribly profitable in general. It’s a prestige thing. This is why Kirkland was willing to push out Paul Clement a few years ago - they decided the political pushback from clients wasn’t worth the prestige and there was no financial incentive to keep him.

like

I think they are massive profit centers when you have the experience he does. I remember reading an article that his rate is in the $2000ish/hour

A6 - usually it’s the ratio of associate hours to partner hours. Big investigation or litigation, 2-3 partners 6-8 associates. Lots of hours. Big appeal, 2-3 partners, 2-3 associates. Not as many hours. The appeal is “lower leverage” because there isn’t double/triple/10x the number of associate hours under the partners as in other practice groups.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I’m a new hire and currently the only creative on a team of developers. I’ve requested Figma—but IT has pushed back, asking for “detailed business justification… explaining it is beneficial or will assist in day-to-day tasks”.

I’ve already provided info of that nature directly from Figma’s website. Suggestions on what else might convince them?

Further context: our marketing dept currently uses Sketch. And my employer’s industry is insurance claims management.

Sup UX bowl, I am about to go into salary negotiations for my new role as an Associate UX Producer in the Cincinnati area for a digital agency based in KY. Any one have any insight into what a proper salary for a position like that would be?

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

Senior attorneys at v100, how common is it for attorneys who start at small firms to lateral to biglaw? Have you worked with any? Conventional wisdom is always that if you don’t start there it’s hard to “trade up”. My coworker and I just did it to two different great v30 firms, and I’m wondering if it’s really that uncommon? Just out of curiosity. We’re not special counsel with special niche skills or anything, just associates. Pitfalls to beware? Positives?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔
