I was cleaning out my closet last night. The left side of my closet is where I typically keep plastic bins for storage. I don't think l've gone through those bins in over a decade. I put gloves on to touch the wall after seeing the mold and it does feel fully dry. I'm going to assume this is old since it is dry. I've removed everything from my closet. I don't know how long this has been there. I have not felt any of the symptoms related to mold, thankfully. I have chronic migraines, but l've had them since I was a child. I tried to label what is on the other side of the walls in my closet. The other side of one of the closet walls that is my bedroom doesn't show any visible signs of mold. The wall to the right backs up to my bathtub. I have been using my bathtub daily for the past couple of years. I’m going to assume it’s not that. If it was, I think the mold issue would be a lot bigger.
Would they have to rip up the entire carpet of my closet and a bedroom? I'm currently planning to renovate the entire house in the late 2026 or 2027. This will depend on the economy and how much funds I can save up.
How likely is home insurance going to help with the repair costs?
I would love to hear others' experiences as this is my first experience.

When was the property built? Is there a chance of asbestos?
The most important thing is figuring out where the moisture is coming from and stopping that. Ripping out carpet / drywall isn’t too expensive (as long as there isn’t any asbestos issues), but if it comes back later, it’s all for nothing. There’s also the unknown of what’s behind the wall once you open it up.
Neutralizing and disposing of mold (even black mold) isn’t complicated. But if you have to do containment and abatement of asbestos, the price tag will double.
Thank you SO much! This is all new to me so I didn’t know if I should be expecting it to be as much $10,000 to $25,000 before further behind the wall damage. I feel so relieved. My only experience with home repairs have been unfortunately the costly ones (entire fence, roof, and HVAC system replacements) so I was thinking it’s going to be like that. I am perfectly fine if there’s a carpet seam. We were planning to do an entire home renovation late next 2026 to 2028. I am also willing to paint the drywall and baseboards and learn how to install baseboards to save on labor expenses.
